16 Minute Delay in SEC Tournament

I absolutely disagree with this.  Let's talk spirit and intent of the rule, which is to protect the batter's opportunity to hit the ball.  Watch the replay.  The batter is bailing out before the pitch even gets to the plate.  The announcers keep talking about the position of the catcher.  In this play, that's not even relevant.  What IS relevant is the BATTER is backing out of the batter's box BEFORE the ball arrives.  The correct call should have been the runner is out. Period! As an umpire, it would be ten times easier to defend not calling it than calling it.  "Interference? Coach, your hitter wasn't even in the batter's box!" And, (Randy Bruns are you reading this?) these words should be added to the rule:  "...without possession of the ball and interferes with the batter or touches the batter or the bat......."  Amen.

It’s much more likely that if they add anything to the rule, it will be that the batter is not required to swing, or to be prepared to swing, for the penalty to be enforced. The NCAA isn’t big on catchers getting decapitated.

How do you get catcher's obstruction on that?  The batter had a clean swing!

I thought exact same thing. Could hear the coaches argument in my head: "Batter swung exactly where he wanted to!"

(and thank god F2 ducked down or it would've only been 1-2" clearance)

This will be a fanboy or old school umpire argument. Gonna have to up the ante. Swing at the pitch, glove. break the catcher's back. No @beerguy55 I don't think any coach would think that way. Actually the batter should show bunt. Keeps catcher back and gets call. Off topic, some rec ball/Pony league would eject a coach if his batter swung on a steal of HP.

Double off topic -  I was ready to grab a 10yr olds bat after he showed bunt and pulled back. He showed so early that F3 and F5 were 4 feet away by the time the ball reached batter. Thank goodness he didn't.

Also, thank goodness our league opted "no slash bunting" at 10U. I have no idea if batter and each knew that or not of course.

Unfortunately, some will.

Conversely, there are some umpires that want this too - ie. if there's no contact there's no INT/OBS.

Agree with this 100%.  Don't care if it was a missed sign.

In the Nicholls/SamHouston video above, just show bunt...show a suicide squeeze...if you really think you need to do something to get ump to make the right call.  Batter is also lucky he didn't have his ACL/MCL destroyed.

And...no infield fly! What's this world coming to?

We have infield fly. Can they hit it high enough and reasonable effort may entail it landing in there glove with no effort, but we have it. 😁

Slash bunting is a personal peeve. LL should ban it on the small field, imo.
