ArchAngel72 Posted April 8 Report Posted April 8 https://www.wmur.com/article/little-league-umpire-training-nh-shortage/60418095 Was a good turn out and yes my Fat butt is out there on the field... sigh.. 2 2 Quote
834k3r Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 I chuckled a bit at the scenario going on in the background as they interviewed the kid. Seems the U1-in-training needs to work on his timing. 🤣 1 1 Quote
SeeingEyeDog Posted April 9 Report Posted April 9 Um, with my first round selection in the Umpire-Empire Fantasy Umpire Draft, I am taking Cameron Bernard of NHLL District 1 and we've never even seen him work a game. How do you not give a kid like that all the support and a helluva look as an umpire? Also, I just ran one of these myself this past weekend for the first time. I ran a dozen first timers through an hour of classroom and an hour on the field. My thought as I pulled into the parking lot which then became my opening statement was, "At pro school, students get 240 hours of umpire instruction in 30 days. I'm giving them 2 hours today and then they're off to work games..." LL has a lot of helpful umpire resources and it was very challenging to consider what was important enough to make my presentation and what was left on the cutting room floor. Lots of observation and evaluation to come... I'd also like to take this opportunity to say, if you are not working with your local LL umpires in some capacity, please consider doing so. You don't have to work games, you don't have to schedule games, you don't have to sit on the Board and attend meetings, you don't have to be a UIC, you don't have to adjudicate ejections, etc. Just contact your local league, tell them you're an umpire and would they like some assistance with pre-season training and/or mentoring. ~Dawg 3 Quote

But 99% of them have never done this before and while its all rudimentary training its also done within 3 hours so their was a lot covered and not near enough to say they are DONE training but yeah lots to go over with them all. I did have some fun with my group and tossed in lets see your called 3rd strike call. One kid was doing a windmill that looked like a early 80's guitar god. It was awesome but ill advised as he was tossing his head around with it too LOL. But yeah I just went back and looked I was too busy watching/listening to Cam to notice that F3 dropped the ball. LMAO I never watched the background till then 1 Quote
ArchAngel72 Posted April 9 Author Report Posted April 9 Cam is well versed and has been umpiring for like 10 years now? He just did a Regional 50-70 tourney for LL which I thought was incredible at his age. ** he is also NH D1 co-UIC 2 Quote

Oh, I get it for sure. We all started there (or someplace similar). 1 Quote
JeBa Posted July 13 Report Posted July 13 I met Cam while we were attending the 2024 LL Umpire Academy in Bristol in April. He's a very impressive & well spoken young man and will go far in his umpiring career if he chooses to continue. Goes without saying that his mechanics were top-notch. Jeff 1 Quote
JeBa Posted August 8 Report Posted August 8 Saw Cam last night in Bristol at the CT vs NY Metro Regional elimination game. He was on 1B & looked great. He's on the plate today (ESPN 8/8/24) for the MId-Atlantic Regional elimination game Washington DC vs Maryland. 2 Quote

Funny story regarding younger umpires. Third baseball meeting of the year. A first-year umpire is talking with a veteran. "Gee, I have already worked eight games," the younger umpire says. "WOW! That's pretty good for a first-year umpire," the veteran replies. At which time the first-year umpire asks, "By the way, when are we supposed to get our rule books?" 3 Quote
