Jimurray
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo woke up `steaming' mad over umpire Alfonso Márquez's strike call (msn.com) That's what I thought it was and the announcers subtly thought that when you make it up on a following count it can be more than a makeup and change the at bat. I haven't done any make up calls but I have told both guys I just missed that. They both know I won't miss the next one and the at bat doesn't change. The Ripper
Noooooo, NO MAKEUP CALLS!!!! There is not such thing, if you miss a pitch and you know it, it happens, but you move on. No umpire is perfect, we all make mistakes and we have to move on and call the next pitch. If you let that pitch you think you missed effect you, you are going to missed the next…the next…and the next. Confidence is key on the diamond when you are umpiring, but confident it yourself, you would not be out there if no one thought you should be out there! And for anyone that thinks there are make up calls in the MLB… you are mistaken. Every single umpire in the MLB has integrity, and they are not going to “ do a make up call” just because they think they missed a call. The reason I know this is because of the technology today. Every pitch/call they make is recorded, if it is a good call, no one cares, but if they miss a call, they get heck for it! All this talk about automated strike zone and challenge system make them have to be perfect or they will bring in more technology to fix it. So no, in the MLB there is no make up calls because critics will criticize them in a heartbeat. Be confident, if you miss a pitch, move on and focus on the next because if you do not, it will effect the next pitch! Happy Umpiring!!! I mean...I'm sure...SOMEWHERE...out there in the world of AMATEUR baseball a makeup call is being made...somewhere... In the 2023 World Series (if ever on the biggest stage of the game?) no. No, I do not think makeup calls are made. Again, for those of you who missed it elsewhere...Since MLB started using pitch tracking technology, there have been TWO perfect zones called by plate umpires. One was Pat Hoberg last year in the playoffs and the other was earlier this season. Until a challenge system is implemented, missed pitches are a part of The Game. That's why the rules give you 3 strikes, four balls and you can foul pitches off eternally once you reach 2 strikes. I don't have any idea what MLB's standards or expectations are but, according to umpscorecards.com the top 3 guys this year (minimum 12 plates) were Quinn Wolcott (96%), Pat Hoberg (95.5%) and Jansen Visconti (95.4%). So, the best guy this season miss 4 out of every 100 pitches. The 3 worst (minimum 9 plates) were CB Bucknor (92.5%), Angel Hernandez (92%) and Scott Barry (91.2%). ~Dawg
Umpy
The couple bad misses I've seen in the World Series so far looked like just absolutely amazing frame jobs. If they didn't have the rectangle and dot graphics up I think we all would have been just as fooled.
