Greetings brothers,

Lots of talk about matching masks and frames in another thread led me to view All-Star's offerings. I apologize if this has been covered previously. I am still unclear. I currently own a black MAG with leather pads and a silver MAG with black, LUC pads. Can someone please explain the difference between the FM 4000 Magnesium Replacement Pads for $44.99: https://all-starsports.com/products/fm4000-magnesium-replacement-pads?_pos=6&_sid=62e877b98&_ss=r

...and the FM4000 Replacement LUC pads for $39.99: https://all-starsports.com/products/pfm4000-luc?_pos=22&_sid=62e877b98&_ss=r ???

The MAG pads have a much larger lower pad with a 'plastic' insert in front.   Upper pads are the same.  Just look at their site at a mask with pads (photo) ... you can see it.

Wow! The regular LUCs are up to $39.99 now?  This makes it a no-brainer then to spend the extra $5 and get the safer MAG LUCs with the plastic plate insert and larger jaw profile.

I wouldn't go any other way! The bulk of the MAG pads does get some getting used to. But until Force3 gets off their high horse and gives us non leather pads, I will be sticking with my MAG pads.

I love my All Star leather pads.  Chicks dig leather pads.

I think this pic does a better job than the stock ones in showing how much bigger the Mag pad is than the standard.  These are both FM4000 steel frames.  Love the mag pad! (Not to mention the distributor plate in the Mag that the standard doesn't have.)

How do they compare to the LUC pads? Are they heavy? I keep debating getting them, but they aren't cheap.  Do they wear well?

I love BOTH the LUC and the leather All-Star pads. The nice part about the LUCs are they can be washed in a washing machine and air dried. They both feel great however because the LUCs are more porous, if you have facial hair, it will poke through the ultra-fine weave of the pads. You don't have that problem with the leather pads. The leather pads like ALL leather products, require a bit more care season to season...like a baseball mitt.

I remove the leather pads from my mask at the end of every year and slather them with Nokona Glove Conditioner. A 3.5 oz. tube is about $10. I hang the pads up inside overnight and then in the morning I wipe off the excess and put them in a zip lock bag for INDOOR storage during the off-season. Then about a week before the next season starts, I get them out of the bag, slather them again, let them sit overnight again, wipe off the excess again and then mount them up. The new leather pads arrived buttery soft but with 2 years of use and care they are even softer now. The pads WILL show black dirt on the insides of the pads. Assuming you don't share your mask, that is of course YOUR schmutz and while it does not appear from the outside of the mask, it is a bit unsightly. I keep waiting for the leather to wear through a small hole some place or the stitching to rip or some other problem requiring their replacement but, they have been very durable.

I like the way the leather pads feel much more.  I use the LUC pads with my Nike mask and they are just fine, but the stubble getting intertwined with the material of the pads sets off my OCD and I hate to shave, so that's out.

I cleaned my LUC pads in the dishwasher or the washer and let them air dry.  Only thing I do with the leather pads is spray them with lysol after using it.  I spray all of my plate gear after every game. Tampers down the locker room smell in my car.

Thanks! I've been debating about getting the leather for a while now - if they had them in black leather I'd get them in a heartbeat.

I wouldn't wear it. But that doesn't mean I don't think that wouldn't look 🔥
