You are such an umpire nerd @Richvee!

LOL So true. Funny story… Just before we took that picture, we’re watching the play and the replays and I’m explaining the wedge to my friends and how perfect Porter was positioned and what a great call it was. . ( all baseball fans so they were genuinely interested. Or at least they pretended to be). Later we were looking at the picture and a friend says, “ check it out, we even got that umpire making that great call!”

Evaluator:  One more step and he wouldn't have had to lean.  B- grade.

Ain't that typical? Certain people are always a critic, and can never accept perfection ideal.

What step? He’s already standing in the runner’s lane.

Catch18, there exists a singular wellspring of ever-confusing and ever-contradicting advice in baseball, and it is found in the mind of an umpire evaluator. Know how (we've been told) matter and anti-matter are always in opposition and conflict? How thrust and drag are? How lift and gravity are? Well, here's an example of what I'm talking about, and it has to do with this play –

"You gotta set and be still to see the play (properly)!" --//-- "You hafta use a read step!"

In the eyes of an evaluator, the only thing Porter could have done "worse" on this play was blow the call. Of course, there's a whole list of things he could have done better...

... otherwise, why would we need (an) evaluator(s)?

Pretty good, Rich.  I have breakfast every Wednesday morning with a bunch of (also old) umpires.  We have a blast!
