LL Minor A (9-11 yo) - 3 coaches dumped

I'm the league UIC and in this game, I am just a parent cheering his daughters team on...

Top of 6, 2 out, 2-2 game, R2/R3.

Foul tip... catcher lazily throws the ball back to F1 thinking this is a foul ball. F1, head down and not paying attention walks back to the mound, R3 being a little more heads up takes off for home. Simi close play at home, but R3 is safe, visitors go up 3-2.

Home team assistant coach starts screaming at VTHC who is in the 3rd base box that this was bush league, yadda, yadda, yadda. Our coach and the VTHC start getting into a heated yelling match, and coming together, they start posturing and escalating. PU is trying to break up this horrific display in front of 20+ kids who are just dumb founded. Both VTHC and our coach get dumped. Lot's of commotion on the field, and somehow our other coach (manager is still keeping it together and acting like an adult) is roughly 1/2 way down the first base line getting into it with U1 when he gets dumped by U1.

PU/U1 get the 3 coaches heading towards the exit and myself and a couple other BOD folks are heading that way as well to ensure they keep the peace. One gets our first coach and escorts him to the lot while I see another manager taking the VTHC to center field. I wander over there and tell them no, he has to leave. I walk the VTHC out to the lot and keep him and coach 1 apart. In all the fray, our 2nd coach who got dumped somehow meanders back to the field where on a play at first, he starts yelling at U1 from outside the fence.

Noticing that this coach had already been ejected, U1 called time and put all of the players in the dugout until another BOD member got to the field to remove this coach.

Game continued fine after that with the visitors winning 3-2.

So for the district tournament, both of these teams lose their coaches... VT loses their manager and my kids team loses 2 coaches.

I can honestly say I was proud of my umpire brothers for handling their business promptly and correctly. I am beyond saddened for the kids, and it broke my heart when my 11 YO daughter was in the lot sobbing along with some other kids because of the actions of these 'adults'. I am embarrassed for our league due to the actions of these individuals.

Just another day on the youth baseball circus train.

You, sir, have clearly articulated why I won't umpire LL or even rec ball anymore (plus the pay around here really sucks).  Now that I'm working HS and HS-aged travel ball, I haven't had a single ejection (knock on wood).  I've had the occasional short argument, but one "that's enough, coach" ends it.  LL coaches are off the rails, and so are their parents.

We have had a few ejections this year... After a five year drought.

Our HS unit had a few instances of parents going after umpires in the parking lot this year.

Age of the players does not mean the fans or coaches will behave better.

Has anyone seen a correlation with the number of coaches a team has at this level and the number of ejections?  I did a game yesterday where there were 10 players in the field and there was 6 coaches.  Two coaches were no-nonsense, if you catch my drift, and while they didn't give us any issues, I could see where they could go bad quickly. Especially if they feed off of the other coaches.

I am still trying to figure out who the players listen to while on the field.  A lot of information overload if you ask me...

@BLWizzRanger, it's been awhile since my LL days...time was there was a rule on the first page of the rulebook that limited each team to a maximum of a manager and two assistants in the dugout. Is this still the case?

IIRC, it's a L Tournament rule, not a regular season rule. I could be missremembering..

It's a regular season and tournament rule. One manager and two assistants. Rule 1.01.

LL did update that rule this year to allow for one manager and 3 coaches in the Tee-Ball/Minor League Instructional Division.

Correct. The fourth coach was to be there to help with covid protocols, sanitizing, etc...

We only had three total four both teams, so number of coaches was not an issue.

This made me chuckle... Did a game in Newport Beach a few weeks back. One team had two coaches, the other had more coaches than players. Don't know what they were there for; maybe to go grab coffee as needed?
