Question
Guest Dave Navarro
Bases loaded, fly ball to outfield. Runner at 1st runs passed second after touching the bag. Thinking the ball was caught he attempts to run back to first retouching 2nd base and is in the basepath between 1st and 2nd. The ball however is not caught and the batter runner is now on 1st, the runner between 1st and second realizes the ball is not caught and attempts to return to 2nd and is called out when 2nd baseman receives the ball while standing on 2nd base. The runner was not tagged. Is this still a force play at 2nd or is the force off because he had alread reached 2nd base previously?

The answer to your question can actually be found in the rules. All three rule sets (pro, college, and high school) agree on this. Here’s the pro rule (I have bolded the relevant portion)-- 2019
