Ref Mag Play 4/2/2020

Recommended Posts

Here's today's play:

Quote

PLAY

B1 hits a pop up near the offensive team’s dugout. F3 goes down into the dugout to make the catch. However, a disgusted player slaps the ball out of his glove.

RULING

That is a foul ball. A fielder cannot catch the ball with both feet in a dead-ball area. The unsporting act does not affect the play, but should be addressed separately (NFHS 2-9-1; NCAA 6-1d1; pro Catch definition).

The ruling is correct for NFHS.

The advice ("The unsporting act...should be addressed separately.") invites the question: how should it be addressed?

I know what I would do. How about you?

Could be anything from nothing to ejection, depending on what's happened so far and what occurred with the slap.

Going to agree, what I do next depends on what happened after that?  I could see anything from a simple WTF look from F3 (going to admonish the offensive team) to yelling and shoving from the players (approaching possible ejections).
