NFHS 2020 Rules/ PoE / Baseballs

Cases 1.1.2A, B and C all imply pretty strongly that there's no need to hand the card back to the coach.  It would NOT get the game off to a good start to do so (at least when I was still umpiring).

No, no, no!  You don’t just get to recreate your own imaginary version of the English language.  Words have very specific meanings.  Your ignorance of the language does not change that.  Use words which have the meaning you intend.

:rantoff:

It’s like those morons who believe figuratively and literally mean the same thing ... or my wife telling me she doesn’t care where we go for dinner.  No.

Not necessarily true...we're discussing a play on another thread where the NCAA rule clearly state "Any member of the offense" only to have people reply that it doesn't really apply to all members of the offense.

**The wife stuff is spot on**

Sorry ... another rant ...

If that is your belief, you are either not reading the book properly or not applying the rule properly.

There is no penalty; but you cannot accept the lineup and start the game.  You hand it back and they do it again.

That doesn’t mean you ignore the rule or do whatever you want (e.g., take a half-arsed lineup card).

Sorry if this offends you, but I’m finding this opinion/point of view (words mean whatever I want them to mean) is most often provided by umpires who don’t read the rule book, don’t want want to rock the boat, and/or don’t want to do their job properly.  Get my check, get me out.

”Coach, you just have uniform numbers for your nine starters on here.”

”Is that a problem?”

”Well, just make sure you do it next time.”  (he won’t) :big_no

Do your job.  Hand him the card back and have him fix it.  Why would you think “there is no penalty” overrules you “shall not accept” it?  That statement, “there is no penalty”, means you can not restrict him to the bench, eject him, disqualify his players, or assess any other thing you can make up because of it.  You do not accept the card and you do not start the game.  Pretty simple.

(You forgot to point out that he can add subs to the list at any point in the game.  THAT part is contradictory in purpose.)

I don't agree. At least in my part of the state, if I'm the only one doing it/enforcing it I come off as a red ass and teams don't like that. It seems like it's different for you.

There's a cost to being right.

All,.... let's keep this focused on the NFHS baseball rule for 2020.

If we feel it's got to a point where it can be locked, let me know.

Thanks

I'd like to hear what actually happens as guys from around the country start their seasons. So far so good but my first couple of HS games here in AZ have been with bigger programs with a bit more financial resources.

Another reason that this thread isn't "dead" quite yet.  VERY interested to see what happens as games begin.  Cali has started for sure, and @KenBAZ reports, also AZ.  With of course, many other warmer states starting, or about to start very soon!

My first game in OH is not until 3/24.

OH still holding to no mark, then no game at this point.

Missouri is also no mark, no play. In fact you have to have 3 to start and 2 to continue.

I hear ya!  I actually (for the first time) blocked myself until 3/30 due to typical weather / field conditions when the teams can first schedule games.  In Michigan (much like PA and other snow-belt states) ...it's useless to even TRY to schedule games the first week (i.e.; 3/20)

One can dream.  Actually, with the way the weather has been, it might not be that far fetched.  Next week is supposed to be in the 50s and 60s although with rain.

Which means that we will have 3 feet of snow the next week when games begin...

3-13 here.. I've been saying the same thing. We're either going to have a major snow event, or flooding rains in the next 2-3 weeks. Almost guaranteed.

Same in Michigan ........ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^This is why I decided to not make myself available until the week of 3/30

LOL - great minds and all that...

We have scrimmages starting 3/16, but I didn't take one until 3/24 due to same reasoning.

Back around 2014-2015, AD called (he was also the Varsity coach) to cancel a game because there was 3 inches of snow on the ground.  I told him that like softball, I had acquired some optic yellow baseballs and that the game would go on.  He got the joke.

I keep thinking about doing that, because I do take personal time off from work for games. I’m just a little worried about ramifications to the rest of my schedule if I said I’m not  working any scrimmages in bad weather. I usually just take the games, a bunch get canceled and I use the time off to do stuff around the house that I know I won’t get to when the season gets going.

3/14 on turf. Even some snow may not stop my first HS game. It's a new field and I am sure they are jonesing to get on it for real.

Hopefully they will have acquired the right baseballs too.

Are these NOCSAE certified too??!! I don’t know, AA... quality of play might be affected, despite your best intention on addressing the safety aspect.

Is the turf NOCSAE -rated and certified? Iddaknow, Kevin, the COR is so much different between turf and grass, it might imperil HS players to the point that the Fed needs to intervene and standardize everything.

Oh, and you’re going to despise me, and @KenBAZ and @Mr Ump ... we just finished games 5 & 6 (for some guys) today in the HS season.

I think the coefficient of friction between the turf, the black pellets and the polyester if baseball pants will be of greater concern when players violate the FPSR and glide past 2B when it's encased in snow or ice.
