check swing batted ball

Guest Gino

Question

In slow pitch softball, the batter starts his swing but checks it because the pitch is falling short. But the batter makes contact with the checked swing and the ball rolls out in front of the plate. The runner reaches first without being thrown out. What's the call? (Contact was made on a 1-1 count)

When a pitch hits a bat it doesn't matter if there was intent or not.   If, for example, the pitch was really bad and went over/behind the batter's head, and with the bat resting on his shoulder the ball hit his bat, it would be a fair or foul ball depending on where it ended up.

I'm guessing that your question involves the fact that in slow pitch softball bunting is illegal.

The definition of a bunt (to paraphrase) is when the ball is "intentionally tapped slowly within the infield". So the umpire here has a decision to make. Was it the batter's intent to tap the ball slowly? If yes, then it's a bunt and the batter is out. If not, then it's just a plain old batted ball.
