Slide or attempt to avoid

Question

Guest BlueBayou

Youth baseball with a slide or attempt to avoid contact rule. The runner attempting to score has a clear path to HP, runs through HP without sliding. The catcher, not in the runner's path, catches the throw and attempts a swipe tag. The ball/glove and runner contact causes the ball to drop. The runner would have been out if the catcher held the ball.

Described it  the best I could. Do you have the runner safe or out for violating the slide or avoid contact rule ?.

The runner didn't make contact with the catcher. The catcher made contact with the runner. Depending on how the rule is actually worded would depend on the ruling. As worded here I have nothing.

Sounds similar to Little League's rule.  The reason for the slide OR attempt to avoid contact, is if the fielder has the ball waiting to make the tag.  If not, it could be ruled obstruction.  If not in the way, why would you require a slide?  F2 should have held the ball on the swipe tag.  I've got safe, nothing else.

Try this.  If the batter hit a home run, would you still require him to slide or attempt to avoid contact?  Of course not, as there is no play being made.

By rule, the runner doesn't have to avoid contact, s/he has to attempt to avoid contact, which s/he did.  No violation.

By rule, the defender does have to hold the ball securely throughout the tag, which s/he did not.  Safe.
