I had to escort a coach off the field this weekend after an ejection, and the entire time i was telling him to leave I was using his first name telling him he had to go.

I was telling the story to an umpire I respect, and he feels that using a coaches first name can lead to a perception of favoritism towards the other coach.

IMO, if you use both coaches first name, it is showing mutual respect.

On top of that, I want them to use my first name as well.

Thoughts?

I use first names for the HC at all levels for both teams.

It is EXPECTED and understood that you use the HC's first name at the college level. They do the same with you... or at least they should.

I feel the same way.  I was a little confused why the person I spoke to felt that way about it.  What he told me he does is call everyone Coach (last name) instead of first name.  I should ask him if he is comfortable with a coach calling him Umpire (last name)

I feel like going last name is lazy and noticeble at the college level. To me, THAT would be more of a "hey... is this umpire scared of the HC?" kind of thing if I was a player. Rather than the umpire calling the coach by first name.

Why?

When I send my email to confirm details I go with Coach Last Name. When I’m on the field it is all first name. I go out of my way to look up their names and pictures if I haven’t worked their games before so I know who I’m looking for.

That's exactly the same thing I do

Please only use their 1st names ( unless you forget)  always use it. It is a sign of respect. In D1 and Pro ball we do this.

When I set up my lineup cards for mound visits I put HC for each team on there.  I mainly use it as a memory device of writing it down to remember.

I will also always write the catcher's names as well.

The more disturbing part of this, from my perspective, and one of my pet peeves, is that someone is willing to strongly assert something that is WRONG, and critique another umpire for doing it CORRECTLY!

I hear stuff like this all the time, and it's usually from guys who don't read, study, or train, yet in their arrogance they feel they need to tell people who DO read, study, and train the wrong way to umpire.

As @Haid D' Salaami indicates, there are black and white standards in many thing in umpiring, and this is one of them. It's really not relative to level/location.

Sometimes, opinions are better kept secret!

I write and circle each head coaches first name at the top of their respective lineup cards.  Every game, no matter how long I've known them.

Stu, I see your very good idea, and raise ya...

If there isn’t a (working) scoreboard, I routinely make a rudimentary score ledger on the back of a lineup card. Instead of writing, “Lafayette HS Sabres” and “Northwest Central HS Pathfinders”, I’ll write, “Jacque’s Team” and “Davey’s Team”.

from a coach's perspective, I always asked for the first name of the umpire and would right it in my score book, it's a game, speak respectfully and politely even if you disagreed with a call.

I thought it was always better to be on the good side of the men in blue, not that it would change a call or ruling, but no need for it to be adversarial.

Something about it being easier to catch flies with honey?

funny, I almost used that exact phrase, but thought it insulting to the membership, so I chose other words.

question... why are you worried about the score?

Using first names can definitely diffuse situations.  "We're not arguing balls and strikes today Bob" is going to be much more effective than if you use "coach".  Also, coaches at higher levels might take offense if you don't use their name.
