Summer season starting

Well, college and high school ball season have ended for me.

 

Now we get to start "Select Ball", with daddy coaches that know zero rules or how to act on the field.  I have a PG affiliated tourney this weekend and in somewhat "dread" mode.  Anyone else have the same or similar feelings after "real" seasons are over?

Back in Wisconsin, real – competitive, productive, and lucrative – baseball began right about now. High School baseball, with its cronyism and "good ol' boys club" when it comes to umpires (at least in SE Wisconsin), would be ending and the Travel Ball teams would be tuning up. All of May, going into all of June, I would have at least one game per weekday evening of 12U – 16U baseball, with weekends bringing Showcase and Tournament ball for 18U and-down of 12-16 games spanning Friday thru Sunday (heavily dependent on weather). Wisconsin doesn't have much of a college baseball scene, so the opportunities were extremely limited.

The Northwoods League would be starting up about now, so there's that to consider...

Here in Arizona, real baseball never seems to end. There are a glut of tournaments and leagues that start up as soon the last High School championships are played. The Minor League guys all depart for their summer league assignments elsewhere, and sure, the colleges wind down, but the Showcase and tournament ball kicks into gear. August here is the only "scarce" month – it's just too damned hot for baseball, and then monsoons spoil the rest.

I can't speak for everybody, but this umpire is glad to see summer hit, and bring the end to Little League (Minors and Majors) and Freshman baseball. Ugh.

I posted in "Free For All" with the same sentiments. Summer is really awful with regards to the "daddy" coaches for me. Fall is a bit better, but nowhere close to the pleasure(mostly) it is to work with the HS coaches in the Spring.

I did a game last night where during the ground rules one of the coaches complained that umps have been getting judgment calls blatantly wrong and asked if we could overrule each other. I briefly explained the situations where an umpire might ask for help but added that help must be requested by the ump that made the call and we would never "overrule" each other. I knew from there we were going to be in for it and I was right. He bitched and moaned about every little thing the whole game.

Mixed bag for me, doing mostly high school summer ball, Connie Mack, Legion, and MSBL men's baseball. A ton of good baseball, with a bunch of knowledgeable coaches. But then there are always those mixed in that bring some dread. 

For instance, had a catcher in a Connie Mack (13-16 y/o) game the other night, big strong kid, rising senior, couldn't catch a cold, totally outmatched by his pitcher (which I don't see a ton of in high school/college season), who threw hard and had good off speed stuff too, that the catcher just couldn't handle; no fun for me, hard to get settled...

...but for the few of those, our summer ball here in PA is pretty good.

Depends. Just down the pike from you, it's uneven--good, mediocre, bad.

All relative, I suppose. I sometimes allow my expectations to be too high, especially after a couple strong men's games, especially now having called some college games this spring. But I have to remind myself, I'm an amateur umpire, and these are mostly kids, however talented, who are still learning the game. 

That said, if we're talking about coaches and managers, different story perhaps, because they often fail to act like adults, not to mention mentors and coaches. But praise God, He's given us a remedy for that, and while His grace is sufficient for all in terms of salvation, I'm taking about the good ole boot! 'See ya coach, you're no longer welcome here!'.

I'd like to point out that my post above was directed at the summer coaches in comparison to HS coaches. I have been problems with the players. The only time I might have a problem is when the coach's bad attitude rubs off on them...
