Question

Guest Jeff Wilderotter

A tie game, bottom of extra innings, runner on 3rd 2 outs,  ground ball to 3rd, 3rd baseman attempts a play at home plate, runner is safe. Batter does not reach first base, catcher throws to first and forced out the runner. Does the run score because the first play was attempted at home. Or is the 3rd out end the inning

The batter-runner is not forced-out at first base though a BR being put out before reaching 1B is treated similarly to a force-out in that no run can score if that was the third out.

Rule 5.08 (new system) 4.09 (old system)

Quote

EXCEPTION: A run is not scored if the runner advances to home base during a play in which the third out is made (1) by the batter-runner before he touches first base; (2) by any runner being forced out; or (3) by a preceding runner who is declared out because he failed to touch one of the bases.

Yeah it all depends if the catcher caught the ball and made the throw or if he tried to make a tag first, and how quickly that happened. But if we're talking about 11-12s on 60 ft bases, not good for BR...

Even on 70 foot bases... Not good.

Technically and semantically correct.  Annoying when trying to explain this to a newbie.

ALL of the rules of a force out are identical to a put out on a batter-runner at 1B.
