You don't get this level of access as a fan.  THIS is why we umpire...we have the best seat in the house!  Not for the praise...but to be a part of the game.  The fans have no idea of the relationships we develop over the years with players and coaches.  We might get upset from time to time, and we might make calls that cause them stress at times...but at the end of the day, people just don't understand how connected to the game we are.

That's a great exchange.  Not trying to take anything away from it, but knowing that he is miked, how much do you think this affects what Angel says, or does not say, or how he says it, during the course of a game?

Angel's words "you're awesome with us" is very telling.  Is he is saying the "umpire fraternity" has no issues with Rizzo, like arguing the strike zone, etc?

Rizzo doesn't argue much. He doesn't start problems either. I think about his only incident was sticking up for a teammate when Chapman threw a couple benjis over his head and wouldn't stop talking smack. Then he tried to take on the whole Reds team by himself.
