obviously Rolo you were looking to do the right thing and protect the welfare of your partner, props to you for that.

FWIW - I work in a profession that words and how they are delivered make a huge difference on my income.

I have found over the 20 years that I'm doing it,  how the message is delivered, both the words, demeanor and manner, matter A LOT.  Sometimes its the messenger as well.

many times one has to "Sell " the idea to the other person, even if they should know the right thing

Ok, everyone relax ........

No one was there but Rolando, and to be honest, his description of what transpired wasn't the most detailed.  Just because of the words Rolando used, doesn't mean he was being an a-hole to the guy, however, his words in the OP may have come across like he was.

Maybe we can give our long term member here a little bit of the benefit of the doubt ........ at the same time, the reaction he's getting from some members here could be because of the reaction of the TD.   If Rolando wasn't demanding and approached him right, why did he fly off the handle?

Regardless, ...we weren't there, he was.  Let's trust his word and not be too fast to ridicule

I have a partner that could possibly die. That's not what you are seeing!

You bet your ass I will be demanding.

Still looking for the answer to "did anyone else see the situation and what was their reaction to your partner being dizzy, puking, etc?" That could tell us a lot to the situation and how it was handled.

Learn how to talk to kids and adapt that for adults who are non-leaders in leadership roles.

"I think he's suffering from heat exhaustion, should we call 911, or replace him, and let him recover?"

Your leader is now in a situation where he has to make a decision, instead of taking over and telling him what he should do, you've taken control of the situation and offered him 2 possible solutions. By instructing him on what to do, you've challenged his authority, it doesn't matter how nice you do it. But by offering solutions, you are allowing him to make the decision, hopefully one that works for you as well.

Of course, you will run into people who are idiots and will end up doing something stupid regardless. We learn and try to avoid those people.

Know what my role is and how to get results from a superior? Absolutely.

Sorry

Your "role" is to take care of you team member FIRST!

I wont respond to this post again BUT if a 'superior' directed me to abandon my partner when he needed help JUST FOR A BASEBALL GAME  things will get ugly real quick.

Combat is different. Baseball is just a game for little boys and and is being ruined by greedy tournament directors.

OUT!

FWIW, I don't accept the analogy between a SD and a boss on the job or a superior. It's one time when our independent contractor status might give us some authority to make decisions for ourselves and our partners. And, again fwiw, bosses need to know how best to get results from their employees or "inferiors."

OK I don't like where this topic has gone.  We have a medical situation, you tell a site director there is a medical situation.  REGARDLESS OF HOW IT WAS SAID.  Slow down, figure out what the medical situation is, and complete the task at hand.

F the "respect my authority" bull s$%T and figure out why an umpire would ask to replace an umpire in the first place.

Jax didn't say "get this guy off my field, I have to carry his ass, and he smells too" he said "we need to replace this guy, he's visually ill"

If the SD has been around as long as Jax says he has been, how many freaking times would they have an Umpire come up to him and say "we need to replace my partner." My guess is slim to none. So it must be dire.

Everyone needs to quit being F*&^ing red a$$es and just have a little bit of compassion.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

"Taking care of your team member" and telling the TD / SD "you need to replace my partner" are two different things.  We all (I think) agree with the first part -- "my partner is sick and cannot continue."

And, based on what has been reported, no one told Jax to "abandon his partner."

Finally, lots of what works in the military does NOT work in civilian life (and vice-versa).  We all need to use the tools / communication methods that are appropriate for the situation.

That's great advice for a TD. This isn't a site for TDs, though. We can only do so much in a situation like this, and how to get the most effective resolution is key. That's why we need to approach this in a way that isn't adversarial or demanding. If this situation warranted that, it warranted an immediate stoppage and EMS.

From a psychological point of view, offer 3 options, with your preferred option listed last.

I am still waiting for Jax response to the other people at the game.  Seriously everyone, if an umpire is puking on the field, no one is saying anything?!?!?

That's what I was kinda wondering.

I did once because I had a stomach bug. Puked in short right field between innings. No one even noticed. F9 was right there too. Must have been too busy throwing the ball around. I was none the worse for the wear so we moved on. I'm convinced that to this day no one in attendance at that game even knew what happened.

I've done it a couple times, I try to if I have to before going on field, but I suffer from post nasal drip,  because of allergies + deviated septum (or I'm pregnant), and it triggers my ultra sensitive gag reflex, and sometimes I puke with little warning. But never because of heat.

Most games I've done, there's always someone asking if we need water, if we're doing ok. I guess I just work for nicer humans.
