Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 3230 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

All I will say is that my friend's name was drug through the mud over the 2016 BRD and I will not support a person who does this to a friend by giving him any money for this year's edition.

It's unfortunate too, because I have owned every BRD since 2007 or 2008.

@johnnyg08 so you are trying to support a friend. Good for you! That is a class act on your part. I think I saw that post in officiating.com. That is the same thing that I was trying to do, support a friend,  when I posted the AllSports East sale post in here, at umpire.org and at forum.officiating.com. Which in the last, officiating, they, unjust, blocked me to post there, no problems in this and in umpire.org.

If you want to sell your BRD collection and show more support towards your friend let me know.

For the most part I've simply remained silent on the topic.  Screw it, I'm in the mood to talk today.  I never signed a non-disclosure.

Let's just say that I should've gone with my initial gut instincts when it came to Mr. Childress.

I can't help but think he already had Mr. Rice in place when he cut me loose from the project.  I wish him well in dealing with Carl, I really do.  I also wish him success in learning Carl's publishing tools of choice, which are not what any other publisher in the world would be using.

The BRD suffers from an author who lives in the past and thinks that a book like this sells itself.  I'm a sales and marketing person, by profession.  At the time of my dismissal, I had already had a meeting with Referee magazine and was already in the process of arranging meetings with HS state baseball directors.  But Carl tied my hands even in my area of expertise -- everything had to be done Carl's way, which meant that the book had to be published on-demand, which severely limited what I could arrange with third party groups who wanted to sell the book themselves.  He also refused to let me sell just the PDF version of it -- which, as I mentioned to him, was pure profit and would appeal more to people these days who would like to just have a searchable book on a tablet or phone or even available on a laptop.

I'd love to give away my copy of the BRD to someone who guesses how many 2015 BRDs were sold, but I've already given mine away.  It's really my fault -- the warning bells should've gone off when he told me how much he profited from this last year.  My first thought was -- well, I need to sell more of these, cause this isn't enough to take on this project.  It really isn't -- I make considerably more officiating in a year than that and I'm just a HS official these days.

Finally, I will point something else out.  I went into this project in good faith.  I never discussed money with Carl, other than his terms when I took the book over in 2 years.  The work I did put in, the meetings I had and sought out, the rest of it....you know what I got paid?  A free BRD and a request to send his computer disc back to him.  He didn't even reimburse my postage when I sent it to him (only to stop the regular emails asking me to do so).

When my dad passed away last month, Carl found out through the grapevine and sent me an email of condolence.  I was in Pennsylvania at the time dealing with the aftermath and getting ready for his service the day after Thanksgiving.  At the end of the email, Carl reminded me to send him his discs.  Again.

So there you have it.  Some will think this is just sour grapes, and that's OK.  Life goes on.

Thanks, but I will be keeping my BRD collection for now.  Buying another one, ever, will be dictated not by me, but by CC.
