Interesting that PU is in very different spots for what I view as a similar play

 

In the second vid I don't see how the catcher could have done that better with his positioning

Bingo ....  Gibson in MUCH better position

i think its because davidson expected a throw to 1B instead of reading the play and moving to 3BX. But this is also the same guy that rotated to 3B on a base hit, with no one on, and made his call at 3rd with his mask still on.

called ... third base line extended (3blx) ....that's how it's taught all the time now (basically) ...see the first video w/ Gibson

If it's a swipe tag, 3BX is (usually) better.  If it's a collision, 1BX is (usually) better.

 

There used to be "lots" of collisions in MLB; not so much anymore.

He'd probably tell you that he should've moved straight to the point of the plate and allowed the defense to take him to the next place on the field.
