I can't speak to all night, but the called strike was pretty far out for MLB (umpire's perspective):

That's not, of course, a license to lose one's mind.

Not that it really matters, but is this plotted from behind the plate? The pitch was outside on Carpenter and he was batting left handed.

I was watching the game live and as soon as he called it I said, "Oh, wow!" It was really wide.

It was interesting to listen to the broadcasters...they said later in the game that Carpenter (apparently there's a stat for this) has the most strikes called on him that are outside the strike zone. I filled in several times when he was in AA and I can attest that he has a pretty good eye for the strike zone.
