Glad you posted this, @Thunderheads !  I had that game on, in the background while I was doing something else, and noticed the umpires were conferring (and I could hear them) only as it ended! Thanks!

At the MLB level, should Randazzo have come in a kill it right away as he clearly saw that ball hit the bat a second time.  I'm guessing so.  Otherwise, why would Davis have asked him, "and you didn't call foul at the time.  But, you got foul now?"

Jeff, I think you're right, but I see it as a positive for all of us.  And that positive is ...... WE ARE ALL HUMAN ....even the best of the best in the show can 'freeze' on something.  It just goes to show you how difficult what we do really is ........

Notice a great mechanic by PU: F2 gets to the batted ball lightning quick, and he can't possibly move to determine fair/foul. Instead of standing and trying to clear F2 (our usual mechanic)  he goes straight down to see where F2 fields the ball. Nice work.

I'm kind of surprised the umpire "behind" the batter was the (only) one to see it.

I noticed that as well. Randazzo has the stones to fix it; even in MLB, not everyone does.

I totally agree.  I think it's difficult doing what I do at the levels I work.  I can only imagine what it's like at that level!

I noticed that too, Maven. I have to believe it's instinctive.  It's amazing how good these guys are.

Instincts are shared by an entire species. This is the result of training and quick thinking — and seeing thousands of batted balls.

True, but some have better instincts than others.  I know a former pro guy who worked MLB Spring Training who was released because, in his words, "my baseball instincts weren't as good as they need to be."

Yes -- that's what I meant.  Since it was a RH batter, U3 was "behind" the batter.  I would expect U1 to have a better view of this.

 

PU is not "behind" the batter -- PU is "behind" the catcher.

interesting way to look at it, PU is also behind the batter if he's behind the catcher the way I would view it.

I always wonder about fouls around the box from 110 feet away. If you see it call it without question, but sometimes that doubt creeps in and causes that freeze, for me anyway.

Calling foul stops play and a mistake is a mess; letting it go and talking about it allows an either/or. Wouldn't advocate this view as acceptable mechanics, but I too have been in Randazzo's shoes and faced that same question from a CC.

I think here the deflection came off the bat which was fairly parallel to 3B line. U1 has it coming out at him I think, harder to see.

1. We need more announcers like Kaat and Kostas who actually have a clue as to what they're talking about.

2. Let's get more mics on these crews. That's so great to hear their conferences.

Yeah, but that's Phil "The Koala" Cuzzi at U1. Probably wasn't close enough.

In any case, what I really like to see / hear is the mutual, calm coordination and cooperation of the crew. Basner (99) is PU, but he's not gettin' all bossy and up-in-arms about a discussion regarding "his" plate. It's Davis (12) as Crew Chief (and U2, furthest away), yet he's not all sanctimonious in his dealings with the others. Randazzo (11) states what he has to, and Davis goes with it. Cuzzi (10) confirms it (and least in what he saw), but there's no grilling of, "Well why didn't you call it Phil?". 

 

Kinda neat coincidence that we have a near flush in sleeve numbers, eh? 10-11-12... Then Basner's 99. Oh well.
