I have to agree.  He wasn't in the optimum position.  I believe he'd have had a better angle to see the swipe tag much much better from 3BX.  I'm not so sure he was safe.  But, in real-time, the only look PU had, it looked like he was.

Like many of us he got lucky on that one. No way to see a good tag from there. But he got it right.

​Nearly everyone has a tendency to go where this umpire went on plays from the infield.  It's been a POE at the NCAA clinics for a number of years.  You don't really have time to react,. so just back up POP and take a read step.  Esp. in MLB, there could be a "collision" so a step to the left might be needed.

​I thought the same thing when I watched it.  He had no way of seeing the tag on the chest, because his view was obscured by his cap.  I would think he'd want to be at the same angel, 10 or 12 feet away.

Believe the safe call was correct, but very, very close.  As far as positioning what happened to being too close to the play?

​That's a point I can learn from. How close is too close? I've had guys tell me get right up in it if possible (like this play), and I hear others say that too close causes tunnel vision?

I personally think he's too close.  I notice this because sometimes I get too close ...so .......   he did, however, get the call right.

What I hate about the video (and I've seen this before) .... why look at the defensive player while calling the play? What is your motive for doing so?  Are you rubbing it in? Are you trying to show him up?  I've never understood that .... it looks confrontational (to me)

​Maybe it's because you are taught to look at the glove to see if he has control and is it voluntary release.  At least that's what I'm always told.
