"That has been consistent from the 1st inning to now", bottom of the 8th. So, he was't watching the game and saw that Ripperger was calling the high strike?????

I like the high strike.

Mr. Hunter, take a look at the diagram on page 157 of the 2015 OBR Rule Book.

Between him and McClendon, it's Minor League Meltdown Week! That dude who threw the imaginary grenade would be proud.

I do wonder what is up with Hunter. This year he's had a few blow ups and I cannot recall him being a hot head previously in his career, I actually think of him as one of the really just good guys in the league.

Short memory:

doesn't "short memory" come across as a smart-ass remark?

Then eject me!

Just joking.  Seriously, I was just typing (and posting links to videos) quickly at work.  No smart-assness intended in either post (though I can see how it could easily be taken that way!)

In all seriousness, I apologize.  I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass,  but it certainly could be taken that way.

Hunter has been in the league 19 seasons, and I, too, had the impression that he was not a hot head. Even more mellow fellows get ejected now and again over 19 seasons!

Maybe Gil can give us the stats: Hunter's career ejections compared to the MLB average player (or average player with 10+ seasons....). Then we can be data-driven.

Many MLB players go their entire careers without being ejected. Since seasons can be a few or many games (such as those marked by 60-day DL stints), I'll go with games played, specifically the 13 active players with 2000+ G:

  1. Alex Rodriguez - 2624 G - 5 Ejections
  2. Adrian Beltre - 2476 G - 2 Ejections
  3. Bobby Abreu (still listed as a free agent) - 2425 G - 5 Ejections
  4. Torii Hunter - 2287 G - 9 Ejections
  5. Ichiro Suzuki - 2260 G - 1 Ejection
  6. Carlos Beltran - 2222 G - 4 Ejections
  7. Andruw Jones (still a free agent) - 2196 G - 0 Ejections
  8. Albert Pujols - 2173 G - 6 Ejections
  9. Miguel Tejada (FA) - 2171 G - 0 Ejections
  10. David Ortiz - 2163 G - 11 Ejections
  11. Raul Ibanez (FA) - 2161 G - 1 Ejection
  12. Jimmy Rollins - 2150 G - 2 Ejections
  13. Aramis Ramirez - 2106 G - 5 Ejections

By ejection rate,

  1. David Ortiz - One ejection per 197 Games Played
  2. Torii Hunter - 254 G
  3. Albert Pujols - 362 G
  4. Aramis Ramirez - 421 G
  5. Bobby Abreu - 485 G
  6. Alex Rodriguez - 525 G
  7. Carlos Beltran - 556 G
  8. Jimmy Rollins - 1075 G
  9. Adrian Beltre - 1238 G
  10. Raul Ibanez - 2161 G
  11. Ichiro Suzuki - 2260 G
  12. Miguel Tejada - (Null)
  13. Andruw Jones - (Null)

Average ejection rate, players with 2000+ Games Played: Once every 930 games played. Hunter is significantly above average in this regard (3.67-fold). Thanks for getting me to write this.

Whats up with all the arguing about balls and strikes? And the EJ's keep coming...

It's the only thing they can argue. Everything else is a replay. So now insted of yelling when they feel they were safe at 2nd, they point to the dugout and tell the manager to challenge.

I have noticed the same thing. I don't know previous EJ rates (EJ/season) but 83 EJ in approx. 60 game this season seems high, especially since replay review "fixed" lots of reasons to get EJ'd. It seems the EJ for arguing B/S have gone way up since replay review was enacted.

It makes me wonder, if MLB enacted an accurate automated B/S system, what reason would players/managers use to get themselves a day off.

I spend a lot of time on the UEFL forum.  It seems in today's game most of the player EJs are the result of arguing Balls and Strikes...nearly all of them.

Torri Hunter mild mannered....not from the videos from this year...He also had his moment when Joe West rang him up on a check swing to end a game in April I think it was.
