The ball had left his hand before contact was made. In real time it looks much closer (so I get how they could have seen it the way they did) but on the replays it doesn't appear to be interference. Is this a call to NY type of play?

I don't see it at all here. He slid across the bag, so he was obviously able to make contact with it, and the fielder had long since released the ball.

He threw a shoulder. Given what these players are making, nobody wants that risk of injury in the game any more. The call is appropriate in amateur ball for the same reason (injury, not $$).

That was ruled a retired runner intentionally interfering with a thrown ball, BTW. BR out for the retired R1's INT.

You can see the umpire indicating to Maddon that the runner threw his arm/shoulder into the fielder and intentionally interfered.

That makes more sense. I thought it was called for your standard "can't touch the bag" interference.

Upon a second watch, you can definitely see Ross raise his arm well after he's been retired. Great call.
