First off, congrats to the Giants and Bumgardner. Not to be a killjoy, but how does he get a win when Affeldt was not a starter, and Affeldt was in the game when the Giants took the lead, and was effective?

(a) The official scorer shall credit as the winning pitcher that pitcher whose team

assumes a lead while such pitcher is in the game, or during the inning on offense in

which such pitcher is removed from the game, and does not relinquish such lead,

unless

(1) such pitcher is a starting pitcher and Rule 10.17(b) applies; or

(2) Rule 10.17© applies.

17(b)  doesn't apply. That's about a starting pitcher who doesn't go 5 and leaves with his team leading.

17© doesn't apply either. That's says another reliever can get the win when the reliever in the game at the time his team took the lead was ineffective. Not true in Affeldt's case.

It's up to Rich Ives to remind me that chapter ten is part of the rule book. So your post is appropriate in this section.

OK. They changed it then. Last night they were saying he Bum won 3 games, the box had Bum as the winner and the MLB scroll had Bum as the winner.

The initial announcement was the Bumgarner got the win. It was changed to Affeldt an hour or so later.

And just because umpires don't need to use Rule 10 doesn't mean it isn't a rule.

Bumgarner

no "d", ...no "t" .....

Bumgarner

Even the doofuses on FOX couldn't get it right last night

My son (16 years  old) got it, though.  In the fourth inning he said, "dad, I think they need to bring in the guy who garners a lot of asses."  I said, "what?"  He said, "Bumgarner, Dad.  Its time for Bumgarner."
