I was asked today in a 18+ league if a player could wear crocks. I couldn't think of any rule saying he can't, but said that it really wouldn't be a good idea. I asked the director of the league if he knew of a rule, he said no. I asked the team why would he want to. I thought it was a really bad idea.

He ended up finding a pair of old running shoes, but was curious as to what you guys had to say.

Thoughts?

No. Nobody should ever be allowed to wear crocs. Crocs shouldn't even be allowed to exist.

Got it, but besides that...  :P

They're not part of the uniform. No. Coaches aren't wearing them either.

PBUC states that players shall wear shoes of approximately the same color and design.

Also 1.11(a)3 No player whose uniform does not conform to that of his teammates shall be permitted to participate in a game.

Methinks somebody forgot his shoes, and instead of driving back home to get them, was asking to wear whatever he had on.

Crocs.

Which are glorified _sandals_. So... to quote @Jocko... "No."

We get this often in soccer. The league rules are, in so many words, that there are to be no open or vented-toe shoes, and you _must_ wear shinguards. Even though there are players that can play better barefoot than most of us with $150 shoes on, it doesn't matter. I've seen guys, too, slip in pieces of cardboard in the shins of their socks... As long as there's something, they qualify. So yeah, beg borrow or... Go to Dick's and buy a pair then return them after... Whatever it takes. But no Crocs!

Shoes are part of the uniform?  Then so are gloves, wristbands, and glasses.  Going to regulate the uniformity of those too?

Read PBUC before you try to figure out what you are talking about.

Oh, and while you are at it, yes. There are regulations on gloves and wristbands.

PBUC is about pro leagues.  The OP isn't.   Using PBUC for rules interps is fine. All the other stuff doesn't matter. That's why the recent MLBUM pubs only include the rules interps. I have copies of both thank you.

Fielders gloves and mitts have size and color limitations. But they don't have to be uniform in color and style. Are there regulations on the color and style of batting gloves?

Wristbands have limits but there is no requirement that all or none wear them (identical uniform - right).

Can an individual player wear eyeglasses or must all either wear them or not wear them?

Does everyone have to wear the same shoe brand?

This may be the most ridiculous argument Rainman has made this season. The answer is no and you damn well know it.

So, I'll use your misguided attempt to work backwards in irrelevant interpretations against you...half the team is wearing crocs and half is wearing regular shoes. Who's out of uniform?

You're sounding more like a coach than he is now. "Everyone knows it's a rule" generally means it's not.

Why would you be offended? I'm not saying it as an insult. I'm saying it to show what you sound like and to get you to think about if what you really are asserting is true.

Let's try not to get too off topic guys.

We're very much _on_ topic, @Moe. There are some of us who would say "No way, no Crocs at this/my game", while there are others who want to trot a/the rule book out and have us locate a citation about where it says in the rules he can't wear them.

There's such a thing as common sense.

Besides, where in the rules does it say, specifically, what the umpire shall wear? How about if we have to wear any shoes at all? How about if I want to wear Crocs or sandals? Better yet, how about not wearing a mask? There's nothing in the rules about where an umpire _has_ to be to call balls and strikes. But when it comes down to it, the spot we _should_ be is behind the plate, properly and legally and _safely_ equipped. I bet you good money that the vast majority of umpires here would, if they arrived at a game having forgotten their mask, would try borrowing one from one of the teams, or from their partner(s), or frantically calling home or a friend to retrieve / bring theirs, or locating the nearest sporting goods store. (Target, irony of ironies).

How many of us umpires would, hand on heart honestly, stand at a plate meeting with Crocs on, and tell the two coaches that we're commencing this game despite my own ineptitude (or laziness) to bring proper footwear, and inquire with the coaches "Are all your players properly and legally equipped?"?

The reactions would be wide-ranging, but they would probably be trending towards absurdity, incredulity and ridicule.

So yeah, because I happen to understand what common sense is, I'll say it — "Those Crocs are not being worn on this field. End of discussion."

So, what other rules are you going to make up?

That's the thing I love about Baseball; if there is something not in the rulebook, IT WILL COME UP in a game if you do enough games. The rules are so ambiguous, someone will bring up something that is not covered. This is where we need to use our common sense. This is why they will never replace umpires with computers.

I dunno. 18 years of games at almost every level and I have yet to use 9.01c.
