Did the Rangers protest the loss? Maybe that statement made the Giants aware of the rule.

they did not protest. MLB just released a statement about it.

If I was on the Rangers roster, I'd have Enterprise rent-a-car deliver a cadillac to yankee stadium, drive to upstate NY or Vermont after the game, find a town with a liquor store that delivers, kick back and watch the foliage for a month or so and try to forget the 2014 season.
