I was watching this game when this play happened.  I think Segal called him out, then flashed a 3-2 count, then came back to the out call.

that's what confused me

Really, really close call. From the straightaway centre field camera, it looked like the ball may have bounced into his glove, or it may have skimmed the dirt while being caught. Tough call.

The ejection was totally justified though. Don't go back to the dugout and keep chirping. You've had your say, let's all move on.

Totally agree about the call.  This was very close.  So close that it's even difficult on replay to be 100% sure.  As far as the EJ....

All that was "Chirped" was to check the ball.  As they do on 100% of the balls that hit the dirt.  I do not like Gardy, but I really don't think this paperwork was necessary.  Should have just motioned to the bench, "I got this" then checked the ball, thrown it out and bam, you're done.  That's "IF" they refused to check the ball as the video seems to portray.

How is it that the announcers are so sure it hit the ground?  It looked to me like it actually hit the glove and the deflected down into the webbing without touching the ground.  Gardy didn't get run for saying "check the ball."  He was ejected for prolonging the argument.

Prolonging the argument, because the ball didn't get checked....maybe....

"It was clearly a foul tip and it clearly hit the ground and bounced up" :smachhead:   :shakehead:   :hopmad:  :jerkit:  :question1:  :lookup

I think it's time to post the definition of a foul tip in every broadcast booth in America. Just like No Gambling is posted in every locker room.

This is what I meant. He wasn't ejected for arguing. That's fine, he's allowed to argue. But he went back to the dugout and kept on chirping as the game got underway again. You've had your say, we're playing ball again. If you're not gonna move on, you're leaving early.

Foul ball.  How, with the use of slow motion instant replay, the home plate umpire missed this I'll never know? Oh wait, he doesn't have that at his disposal. My bad.

I think a mask with HUD display for instant replays is on the making.

A hitter can ask the umpire to check the ball?  What rule is that?

MLBUM: J/R:

An umpire should inspect a ball upon request of the batter or offensive manager, unless

such request is repetitive and unwarranted. However, there is no obligation to switch

baseballs.

Can't wait to see it in the "Mask Porn" thread

Yep. Segal's timing was pretty fast, and he gave the foul tip signal immediately followed by an out signal. Mauer said something, so Segal then gave a 3-2 count, implying that Mauer wasn't out. Yost started barking from the Royals' dugout so Segal called him out again. Someone on the UEFL said the Culbreth at first base gave the closed fist signal for a clean catch. When Segal called him out again that's when Gardenhire came out. It was very close but if Segal had it to do over again I think he would handle it differently up until the ejection.

I can't find that in my 2013 MLBUM or some older PBUCs. Not that I disagree but what chapter is that in?

Oops -- it was in JR -- chapter 25.
