Question

Guys,
I had this scenario in a recent game I was working. Batter turns to bunt, pitch is a fast ball that is thrown directly at him (unintentionally). he is hit directly in the groin. While laying in the ground in utter pain, the catcher states that " he never pulled the bat back, therefore it should be a strike. My ruling was that the pitch was so far off the plate the he was no longer attempting to hit the ball, he was trying to get out of the way of it. He did not continue to "offer" at the pitch while it was coming straight for him. The coach on the opposing team stated he has to pull the bat back. Rule states you must make at attempt to strike "at" the ball. he clearly was not doing that. From the information I have given you, did I make the correct ruling, in awarding him 1st base?
Thanks to all.... KWump58

If you ruled that he did not offer at the pitch, then it's HBP. No rule requires him to pull the bat back, and holding the bat still need not constitute offering. If you ruled that he did offer, t

In softball you have to pull the bat back . If you don't it's a strike.
