"Retaining box?" That's novel. Does the BR have a "freshness date?"

Anyway, just goes to show that this call does NOT need to be the first play, but it DOES have to be a throw TO 1B to retire the BR.

This probably has been answered before but does this apply to dropped 3k?

Thanks

Yes, and uncaught 3K's too.  :)  If the throw to first is coming from behind the runner, whether on a swing, bunt, U3K or other play (like the one in the video), the runner can be liable for interference if he runs the last 45 feet to first outside the running lane.

Interesting to see U1 have the call and not PU.

I thought U1 was mirroring. West definitely had it, and I think had it first.

Yet U1 was the one giving the explanation...

Note Joe West's position for the force play. POP shaded a little 1BLX. The DeMuro thread had some discussion about positioning for that play. It looks like the pros give up the ball into the glove for RLI and swipe responsibilties. http://umpire-empire.com/index.php/topic/58121-dimuro-with-2-great-examples-of-plate-positioning/

As a general rule, I would never select a mechanic just because Joe West does it. :)

Seriously, though, Joe has major mobility issues and is not someone to watch for what the "pro mechanic" should be.

As for U1 explaining the RLI call: he's certainly capable of explaining what the call is and why the BR is out, even though it's not his call. For one thing, he's right there with the BR; for another, the guy who called it is cowboy Joe (whom many players and managers dislike).

I think we're splitting hairs but I'm pretty sure Foster got the RLI first.

Looking at the clip, he calls it IMMEDIATELY.

Regardless, it's an easy no-brainer call.

I'm not going to check again. I'll say only that RLI is properly the PU's call. That makes it unlike runner INT and OBS calls, where any umpire who sees it should call it.

I not arguing primary responsibility is PU.  Foster calls it right away though.

When Porter comes out the 1st base umire points toward home plate and says, "That's Joe's call.  He called it as well."
