Was asked this question. Evidently this happened in a lower level game.

Long inning, umpires lose track of outs, think there are 2 , when only 1. Batter strikes out for what is thought to be last out. Fielders leave field. other team takes it. Scorer brings it to the umpires attention about the discrepancy in outs.

What next? 1/2 inning over. or put the defense back out?

Rule reference please?

Did you think the answer would be different here?

Well, the very definition of an inning....
Rule 2.00: Definition
An INNING is that portion of a game within which the teams alternate on offense
and defense and in which there are three putouts for each team. Each team’s time at bat is
a half-inning.

Rule 5.07:
When three offensive players are legally put out, that team takes the field and the
opposing team becomes the offensive team.

nope just needed the rule reference, that would be why I asked for it

The exact same question was asked on another forum a couple of hours earlier. Seemed like too much of a coincidence.  The rule reference was given there so that's why I asked.

So if someone asks a question on another forum, does that mean they automatically ask it on this too?

You do know what happens when you assume?

Like I said it was asked of me.

Zebra2955 ... Welcome to the rude and snarky and not-quite-all-there world of RichIves.

We put up with him because he's amusing with his "back himself into a corner antics."

He was the same way on other forums ... for years.

He's not even an umpire.  He tries to outsmart the umpires.  He usually fails.

I manage to put up with the "all coaches are scumbag rats" talk on the boards.

Whoa Rich.  Nobody called you a scumbag.   :)

General form of the equation.  :)

 After reading this forum for years, and the cheap shots at coaches (and Rick), as well as listening to his insights, I'd love to sit him and some of the snarkier umpires down for a rules test . . . my money would be on Rick, who is far from being the snarkiest regular poster on here . . .

Good point Rich.  I sometimes wonder "What does this guy have against me?" after one of your snarky responses.  Now it makes sense.  I am guilty of the "all coaches are (not necessarily scumbag) rats" mentality - because the number one priority of a coach is winning the game.

I have no problem with a rat trying to steal a piece of cheese.  It's one of the reasons I have a job.  It's all good.

And I too would put Rich's rules knowledge above most umpires (and just about all coaches).
