I've heard or read the following about Plate Shoes:

New Balance:  Too confining and a bit on the heavy side

Reebok Zig:  Quality issues, shoes didn't last

Pentagon:  ?????????

Any others:  ???????

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

The NB are excellent shoes. Reebok Zigs have only come in a d width. Now, if you can get your hands on a pair of Reebok field magistrate plate shoes, those are the best imo. And replace the shoe laces in all of them.

I own the NB 460s.  They are great shoes and come in extra wide widths.  Also, I did have two separate instances of tearing underneath the metatarsal plate, but all it took was a call to New Balance and they shipped me out a brand new pair (on both occasions) and gave me a pre-paid shipping label to send the defective ones back to them.

That kind of customer service is very important to me because it shows they stand by their product and do what ever they can to help their customers..  My experience caused me to buy their base shoes and a few pairs of casual and running shoes.

The new NB 460s and the old Reebok Field Magistrates are the way to go. You can find some really good deals on the Rebooks.

To me, the 460s are not confining and not on the heavy side...the older 450s...that is another story.

3n2 .. someone will come on here with a pic of the toe dented in, but I've never had a better, more comfortable pair of shoes.  They are light, easy to shine, and ALL BLACK (like ump shoes should be).  And you aren't paying an extra 30 bucks for some athlete to say their awesome.

Concur ... I did have a pair of these and they were really nice! The toe area where the met-plate attaches tore on mine ... .

You are absolutely correct about NB's customer service. Top notch. Had the same issue with mine and they went all out to take care of it. Plus I love their base shoes.

Reebok Magistrates are extremely comfortable. They wear well and take a good shine. And they last.

3N2 are fkn HIDEOUS.

I think Pentagon is the old Spot-Bilt. I have Spot-Bilt plate and base shoes and just got NB 460's and 950's from Santa. They are EXTREMELY light and very comfortable. I love the Spot-Bilts, but they are starting to wear. I intend to rotate shoes to get the most life out of them.

I have a wide foot and wear both.  NBs most of the time but the Magistrates on muddy days because they have better tractiion then the NBs which tend to get like skates on muddy clay.

Had the exact same thing happen to me TWICE and they made sure I had my shoes in time for my next game. NB customer service gets 5 stars!

Owned the old 450s and loved the. After something like seven seasons the piece of leather holding the metatarsal plate down is starting to tear. However, I bought a pair of all black Zig plate shoes last season. I love these shoes. Extremely light weight and feel completely protected in them.

That being said... every item we use eventually someone will have an issue with. A recent example is that a fellow umpire I work with has purchased two Zig black/white mid plate shoes. Both times the thin leather strip holding the metatarsal plate down has torn completely off in less then a week.

I have never had a problem with my shoes except for a bumbling F2 cleating them on the first pitch of the season last year.

I have only used 3 types of plates shoes. The first was an old pair of Honig's, heavy old one. Then I switched to the Davis Patent Leathers which were like night and day. I currently use the NB 450's.

I have the Reebok Zig plate and base shoes and after one season haven't had any issues with them at all. I realize the D width won't work for everyone, but for me, they're very comfortable and have been pretty durable. We'll see how they fair this season.

I loved the Gerry Davis patent leather shoes. Very comfortable and if they were still making them that is what I would use.

Welcome to the site. Good to have someone local on the site.

I have a brand new pair in the box I bought near the end of last season. Got the same deal. Can't beat it.

I've had my Reebok Zig plate shoes for two season now and the've done me great. Easy to clean and a super comfortable shoe in my opinion.
