You want 6.09(c ): A batter becomes a runner when...

"A fair ball, after having passed a fielder other than the pitcher, or after having been
touched by a fielder, including the pitcher, shall touch an umpire
or runner on fair
territory;"

:) It's like my assigner tells people when we are observing and the umpire calls a strike. They ask if it was, he will say must have been, the umpire called it.

If it did, no one saw it

The announcers said it was deflected which explains why U2 was moving one way and then reversed his direction and got hit. So it should have been play on and R1 and R3. U2 doesn't kill it, either because he knew it was deflected or because he was slow on the uptake after being hit. U1 kills it because maybe he didn't see the deflection.

I don't see the ball change direction, the announcers saying it was deflected means nothing. The umpire didn't reverse direction until it was on top of him. The early part of the clip looks like he swipes at it but is just behind it. Now, if the ball was touched then it certainly is live and play on. I think they got it right.

No no no

The actual rule you want on this is:

6.08 The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put
out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when—

(d) A fair ball touches an umpire or a runner on fair territory before touching a fielder.

If a fair ball touches an umpire after having passed a fielder other than the pitcher,
or having touched a fielder, including the pitcher, the ball is in play.

Guys I think it's fairly clear that it changed direction because F1 touched it.  Watch the shot from behind home plate and watch the path of the ball change direction.  I'm also pretty sure I can hear it hit F1's glove when it happens live at the very start of the video.

Can you see through lead, too?

You'd be surprised.

Easy Bam .... I thought I had a deflection also ........

Interestingly enough ..........the video is showing 'not available' now?

It doesn't matter if it hit the pitcher. See my previous post.

it does for the ruling on the field .... sending R2 back to second ...........as they ruled it didn't touch F1

You also need 5.09(f) and 7.04(b) to make the ball dead and advance the forced runners.

This isn't rocket surgery, guys.  If it hit the pitcher, then the umpire, see 6.09.  If not, see 6.08.

In either case, the runners, in this situation, wind up in the same place.
