Looks like U3 went out on the Flyball. Bringing in U2 to make the call.

Shouldn't PU be up for that play?

Certainly could have, if he reads an easy catch rather than a possible hit.

Nice for the Indians to have 3 center fielders in their OF.

CCA: R1, R2. Fly Ball, U3 Goes Out

Umpire Responsibilties:

PU: Moves towards third base. PU reads R2 and if R2 tags and advances to third, PU rotates there for all plays.

Also looks like U2 is never set. Could have been because he realized late he would have to cover the play when PU wasn't there.

Is that the pro read on this play -- what if one umpire reads it one way and the other reads it the other way and both or neither cover the base?  and maybe that's what happened and why U2 was a little late?

CCA is go up for the tag up and then retreat home if the ball is down.

IIRC the pro mechanic is the same as CCA: PU goes up to cover after the retouch.

Wegner might simply have misread the batted ball, which got out to F7 pretty quick.

Heads-up work by Timmons if that's what happened.

I think he was pretty well set for the decision and then walked into the call.

not sure about MLB but NCAA if u4 goes out you revert to 3 man u3 has tag and play into 3rd u1 has batter/runner until 2nd and P stays home

Nope.  The PU has the play at third, just as in 3-man.  Just checked the CCA manual.

1st off the CCA doesnt have U4...

1st off, my CCA manual covers 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-umpire mechanics. Maybe yours omits some chapters? :)

Maybe it has 4-man, but nobody calls one of the umpires U4 in that system.

Spoke to soon--I just check the CCA 2013 manual--under 4 umpire (ok I FU on U4) fly ball to left,catch,u3 goes out u2 has play into 3rd and PU stays home.

Jax the older CCA manules had the same rotation--I just got confused and stated a wrong fact.  The idea is to give the correct answer --- you can work any mechanics you want when when you do that big U13 all star DH

MLB 4 man mechanics do not have PU come up the line here. U2 drops towards the mound and lines up the tag of R2, moving toward 3B if that is where R2 heads. U1 will come into the infield (or rim) to cover 2B as soon as the play heads towards 3B.

Those fortunate enough to have viewed or obtained a copy of this document can verify this on page 20.

Thanks for this.  I assumed as much, actually, and it makes sense to me.

I'm getting to the point where I really think we should leave the plate guy at home as much as possible when we have 3+ umpires.  Yes, the rotations involving the plate guy look cool and it's always great for U1 to make a call at the plate, but it really isn't necessary all the time, is it?

In the 4 umpire system... it goes.. PU, U1, U2, U3... not FU

OK, dude, but where do I check what you've read, what manuals you have, and what you teach?

Your campaign for member of the month is not starting off well. :P
