I personally don't care for combo pants...they feel too baggy on the bases, and too tight on the plate.  Just my two cents.

And they just don't look right in either situation

@Bkesler24 - To answer your original inquiry before UE(!)'s Fashion Police sidetracked us, most decent pants will be around $45-$49 from brands like Honig's, Smitty, and Dalco. Fifth Region Officials has a special pricing event going on right now, and I just got a set of Honig's charcoal combo pants (arrive tomorrow) at $39... I took them up on the offer of hemming for $10, and we'll see how they turn out.

My trusty pair of Dalco heather grays are flat-front size 36. I'm a 34, and these pants must be the forerunner of the "Combo" style, because they still snug up enough to not need a belt (you should always have a belt, though) and they don't look all billowy and flappy on the base paths, but they fit over my armor well enough so I don't look like a pine cone in a sausage casing. And I can still get in a crouch just fine with them. I ordered a set of Smitty charcoal Combos, in a 34 Expander. Now, they do fit and they do expand as advertised, but I'm not sold on them as my one-and-only pant. I'm not a fan of the pleating, since they seem to advertise that I have a NB on. So, if they're my base pants, then so be it, and let's see how these Honig's in 36 Adjuster turn out. Their claim is they adjust, via slider locks on the waistline, to 2 sizes both directions... So I got the 36 for the "junk room" and will adjust it down to 34 for the waist.

Now, to the color topic that @PetePeteSr pointed out... Charcoal is the preferred variety, and the way to go, and I'm surprised that an association would still implement heather gray. But, perhaps the association is _really_ stuck on navy shirts (grrrrr! bleargh!), with which heather gray looks better (as has been pointed out by several fellow umpires here).

I never have and never will wear combo pants.

And after buying a set of Honig's PolyWools this season, I don't expect to buy anything other going forward.

Yea will still wear them. I'm not a real big fan of the dark charchol grey ones. But to each is own

Do all your umpires still wear them?

Personally, I haven't had a pair of heather grey pants in years.  If an umpire came to work with me and only had heather greys, I guess we wouldn't match.

You can get Smitty combos brand new on Ebay for $44 (including shipping).  Here's a link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Smitty-Apparel-Heather-or-Charcoal-Umpire-Combo-Pants-/330710039396?pt=US_Men_s_Athletic_Apparel&var=&hash=item4cffdabb64#ht_359wt_1163

for $40 they are tough to beat. I only own one pair and wear them every game, I simply wash them in cool water and dry on low heat and they still look practically new. They have the waist band expander so if you are in between sizes go with the smaller size (I'm normally a 33-34 waist, i orderd a 32 and they fit perfect).

Is it just me, or has anyone noticed that different vendors have different shades of Charcoal?  To me, heather is less noticeable in subtle differences than the vast shadings of the charcoal.

Damn, that sounded too much like a friggin fashionista.................

I wear combo when I'm on the pads.. base pants just don't have the room in the thigh that I need. We'll see how poly base pants work when I upgrade next season. I ordered base pants from Davis this year in a larger size than I normally wear and they just don't fit me well...dang football body!

Heather gray ? Really ? I'm surprised any association still uses them. Not knocking you, just genuinely surprised.

They gave us the option between Heather gray and Charcoal now in TSSAA..Hell I've seen one partner wear Heather and the other guy wear Charcoal. :smachhead: ......we try to not do this however.

One association I call with officiates baseball and fastpitch . Heather gray is required in fastpitch , so everyone wears heather for both .Combos work with my fastpitch gear but not my baseball gear .
