I was asked this today in school, and told the kid I would have an answer by tomorrow, but I have been looking for an hour and can't find it.

FED, bullpen is in play... Substitute is warming up, and they have a player standing with a glove protecting him in foul territory. Does this player need a helmet?

Apparently the other coach in one of their games made a big deal that it was a "new rule" that they protecting player did not have to wear a helmet... I'm doubtful NFHS would be taking away safety rules, but have nothing to back me up.

1-5-1 is the closest I can find, and it states that "It is mandatory for... as well as non-adult bat/ball shaggers to wear a batting helmet..."

Does this include the protector? He is not "shagging" balls, just there in case one comes to him.

Thoughts?

I got in trouble over this one. On my eval I got dinged for not requiring it. I was 100% correct (3-3-4) HOWEVER none of that matters because the unit leadership decided that we are gonna do it anyway and it was not my place to disregard the instruction, even if the state interpreter says its not required.

So by rule? Nope. But you can stretch 1-5-1 and enforce it.

The way I remember the rule (which doesn't apply to me) is all players in live territory must have either a helmet or glove, not both . . . unless you are a catcher.

I am jealous of the guys learn the rules from "somebody told me once. . .".   Sometimes they come out ahead.

Live and learn.

mjr,

It's a "by state adoption" thing. FED "recommends" but does not require it. (See p.67 "Risk Minimization").

Illinois requires the protector to wear a helmet. I don't know if Michigan does.

Thank you both! I wasn't expecting it to be in Section 3, but now that I look in the case book, bingo!

3-3-4 SITUATION: Player(s) are loosening up beyond first base and in foul territory, the area is unprotected (a) a player with a glove is positioned between the player(s) loosening up and the batter to serve as a protector, (b ) no player is available to assume a position between the player(s) loosening up and the batter to serve as a protector, © a player without a glove is positioned between the player(s) loosening up and the batter to serve as a protector. RULING: In (a), legal. In (b ), illegal, if no player is available to assume a position between the player(s) loosening up and the batter the player(s) must loosen up outside the confines of the field. In © illegal, the player serving as the protector to the player(s) loosening up must have a glove. COMMENT: It is not mandatory that the protector wear a helmet.

Ohio does not require it's use either. FED won't require it until a need is shown for it.
