Is it possible to be in the windup and attempt a pickoff to 2nd?

 

The comment on the rule states that the pitcher may "step and throw to a base." Is that even possible to 2nd? If so, how?

Sure, it's possible. It's fugly, but it's possible. Prolly some kind of jump step.

Maybe I should be more specific: ....without disengaging from the rubber first and without balking, as you could easily do to first or third?  I cannot visualize how it could be done.

Before you start your pitching motion, pivot around and step. Doesn't seem very hard to me.

1. Pickoff from the windup is illegal in FED.

 

2. Pickoff motion from the set is much easier.

 

3. Delivery to the plate from the set is much faster, making a throw down more likely to retire a runner stealing.

So you answered the "which is better" question when what was asked originally is "is it legal".  And you would have more of the element of surprise on your side if you only used this once in a while so that could make up for quite a bit of the quickness aspect.

I just did it to refresh my memory. A move to second is simple,a move to third is a little tough.

Set position is a quicker delivery to the plate, especially if they use a slide step.
