Runner misses first base - what if anything do we signal and why

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 4816 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

This came up in our training class tonight. I imagine it has been discussed here before but humor me anyway.

Runner misses first base on a straight through the bag single. Throw comes to first two steps later. Does the ump signal 'Safe" or does he 'No signal'? Some say the no signal alerts the defense that the bag was not touched and a tag out is still possible. Others say if the runners trail leg is beyond the bag to signal safe because it is assumed he touched the bag even though you know he didn't.

Personally I prefer to wait for a touch of the bag or a tag of the runner as the rules indicate is necessary to occupy the base.

Interested to hear others opinions.

PBUC umpire manual page 53 play 13

"batter-runner hits a ground ball and beats the play at first base but misses the base"

Ruling 13: the proper mechanic is to call the runner safe , indicating that he beat the play. If the defense appeals by tagging the runner (or base) and appealing that the runner missed first base before the runner return to the base, the batter runner will be declared out.

Be weary that the mechanics for the same situation at HomePlate are totally different.

Is that where we make no call until a tag?

Correct. or the runner comes back to touch the plate.

Not on a force at the plate. If there is a force, the runner beats the throw but misses the base, still show safe. Tag play close, do nothing. Tag play away from the plate area, show safe to indicate a no tag.

Treat it just as you would have treated it if the batter had touched first.  Frankly, if he's already two steps beyond when the throw gets there as in the OP, I probably have no signal anyway -- at the most a very casual safe call.

Now that was my thought. Two steps past the bag I am not signaling anything. Been doing it that way a long time and it's gonna be hard to change.

I see that PBUC was mentioned in this thread, Is this still the acceptable mechanic in Fed ball?

Yes

Mike

Do you have some sort of reference for this. While I agree with you, we have some people in our association who disagree saying pbuc is not the fed mechanics

I will look, maybe one of our NJ guys that keep their Fed mechanics book can look.

I can't find anything in the NFHS that references this situation, either way.
