Had a JV game yesterday. I had the Dish.

First batter gets a base hit.

Second batter comes up. F1 Double Sets. I call a Balk.

Coach comes out.

Coach: Rolo, what did he do?

Me: Bruce, he double set

Coach: That's his normal routine. He double sets all the time.  :wow:

Me: I will call it everytime

Coach: That's a bunch of crap. If he does it all the time then it is ok.

Me: Not with me behind the plate.

Coach goes back to dugout.

I guess the F1 magically figured out a method to stop doing it, eh?

Yeah, I never saw him do it again!

Probably a bunch of guys buy that argument.

Last year, y 2nd game of the night, we had a team that had just played on another field. F1 double sets and I call the balk. DC didn't say anything until after the half-inning as he was crossing behind me at the plate. He said the umpire on the other field said it was OK as long as his pitcher "did it every time". I gave a reply similar to Jax's, and the coach said that's what he thought, and added that if I said it was balk, then it was a balk (we've been on the same field a lot over the years).  But, I was waiting on that umpire in the shed after his game. :big_no

Last summer I had R1. F1 steps on the rubber in the windup position. Steps off with his pivot foot. Then steps back with his free foot and raises his hands over his head as if to start the windup. Then he turns and fires to 1st.  BALK! Coach comes out screaming he was off the rubber, he can do whatever he wants! I tell him Coach, he can't simulate a pitching motion off the rubber. Coach tells me..."He doesn't raise his hands over his head in his normal windup." :shakehead:

That's what they don't understand.... "simulate a pitching motion" not "simulate HIS pitching motion"  :smachhead:

I had that same call two years ago that Rich had last year. I knew the coach well and he came out and I told him "the pitcher may not emulate a pitching motion while off the rubber" the argument was that the book says "his pitching motion" I told him that it was "a" not "his" even though I wasn't 100% sure because most of the rules are based on common sense.

Saw him later that week and he said "hey you got it right the other day, good job" first and only time I had a coach admit he was wrong felt nice.

I had a kid some years back that wanted to start his hands before he finished his feet in the set. I banged him. 17/18 yr olds, dad/coach asks what what he did. I explained it and he says he has been doing it all year. I told him it just means he has been getting away with it all year. The kid says he knows what he is doing. So the next pitch he does it again, I balk him. I simply say he has to stop everything. He again says he knows what he is doing. Next pitch, does it again, I balk him. Kid was done, totally lost it. If he hadn't been such a smart aleck I may have try to help him out.

I had a coach yell at me for not verbalizing a fair ball. I pointed fair twice hard and then hustled to get in position. I told him that umpires never verbalize a fair ball and he asked, how is my team supposed to know what the call is?....Facepalm

Sunday I had a HC tell his kid to step out after every pitch. I told him to keep one foot in the box. HC says "He's gotta get the signs." "Steve, he has to keep 1 foot in the box." Kid grounds out. As he's waking back to the dugout and I take my place on his foul line, he says, " That must be a Grand Slam speedup rule." "No Steve. We play NFHS. It's an NFHS rule." "Well I have 2 buddies that are NCAA coaches and they said it's ok." "Sorry Steve, but they're wrong. Even NCAA has a similar rule." "But but but but" "That's enough Steve. Get back in the dugout."

There is a rule in our rec league that says offensive players have to have helmets on at all times when on fields and there is not time called. I give manager warning when player exits dugout without a helmet to grave a bat. Next inning, batter draws a walk, then takes his helmet off midway down the line. I call batter out. Coach comes firing down third base line.

Manager - No warning, blue?

Vegas - In the first, coach.

Manager - But it is my first year!

Vegas - I explained the rule to both your assistant and you in the pregame and in the warning.

Manager - But you have to warn me specifically!

Vegas - That's enough coach. We're playing.

That's the first specific warning I've heard, ever.

If he is playing under a national ruleset they want a team warning, local rule can't supersede the rulebook. Local rules made by fools

True.  Our local rec rules for Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth specifically say that if the local rules are different than the corresponding official rule, the local rule will be used.  Not saying that is right, that's just how it is.

And most national rulesets say that a local rule can't do that. Catch 22.

It's not a problem. Just make a local rule saying that any provisions that prohibit the superceding of national rules by a local rule shall, by local rule, be superceded. Voila!
