Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 4062 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Just thinking... do you think a specific section just for videos would work? Technology is overrunning us and there seem to be vids for almost everything. It would consolidate MOST of the videos scattered across all of the other threads into a more central location, and they could even be sorted by basic content, such as, Mechanics & Training, Baseball Humor, What's The Call?, etc.  A U-E YouTube of sorts. It would be up to the poster to decide if they wanted the video in this section or another, but... just thinking out loud.

Warren will have to address this......

Being the video whore (for MLB plays) I've inquired about this also.

The problem that I see happening is Warren would have to create an entirely new section for videos, and then subjections for subjects .....but I'll let him chime in...

I don't like the idea of a  "video" section.

I like checking out the videos as situation arise.

Wait!

Too much cross-referencing?  Don't like a video section?

I gotta disagree.   Jocko had it right the first time.   Ump-tube.

A MASSIVE library of videos all in the same spot and organized by tags so it can be searched by play, level, category, etc.   There is TONS of info on this site and the videos are very hard to find.

You can still have your regular posts with embedded videos as they occur, but with a little diligence or maybe an automated tool, a copy of the URLs can be moved to a video repository.

For example -

Wouldn't it be nice to click on "Good Mechanics Examples" and see this:

Good Mechanics Section

Blatant OBS A  7.06(a).  Good call, easy call, even thought the announcers don’t get it.

An Excellent OBS B 7.06(b) call and mechanic by Dan Bellino
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=8725303
Notably, Bellino correctly and emphatically ruled obstruction during the June 5 contest between the Reds and Nationals. With none out, Reds baserunner Brandon Phillips made contact with Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond as Phillips rounded second base. 3B Umpire Bellino correctly pointed to the obstruction while keeping the play alive, and when a play was made on Phillips at third base, Bellino waved off the apparent tag out, pointing to the obstruction which had taken place, and awarding Phillips third base on the violation. Bellino's first career ejection occurred this year.

OBS 7.06(b)
3U calls OBS(b), PU calls the runner out then reverses the call and awards the run after getting the signal from 3U.  Good communication.

Another excellent mechanic by Dan Bellino -
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=11487845
He lets everyone know, FROM THE BEGINNING, that he saw the infraction and calls it.  This prevents the play from advancing beyond confusion and entering in to chaos.

Obstruction

Not the best example of OBS, but it will do for government work.
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=4717453

Notice, the umpire calls the runner out for touching the base coach ONLY on the close play.  In the umpire’s opinion, the coach contact assisted the runner’s return to the base, if even for a fraction of a second.

Missed HP mechanic

Runners Interference: Running outside the running lane AND  interfering with a play
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=12549103
Mark Carlson demonstrates excellent Mechanics.  Notice he clears the catcher opposite the side the catcher plays on, then hustles up the line to get angle first, then distance.

More good mechanics:

Date: Wed Sep 8, 2010 11:56 am

Subject: You Make The Call

Runner on first base is stealing on a 3-1 or 3-2 count. Batter check-swings on a pitch that is called a ball. What should the umpire at second base do?

Should he:

(a) Call the runner safe/out?

(b) Call "Time" and award the runner second base?

© Tell the third base umpire to rule no swing? (Joking of course!)

(d) Nothing

What's your call?  Scroll down for the answer and then watch the video.

The answer is basically do nothing other than watch the play, announce that it is ball four, watch for the check-swing ruling, and be ready to call the runner out at second if the check-swing is ruled a swing (strike).

Umpires need to be alert to these situations and be thinking ahead, anticipating a play such as this, exactly as this umpire did!

Notice the umpire makes no call but observes the play, then points to the base and tells the runner to stay there. He then waits for the check-swing appeal and is prepared to call the runner out (demonstratively!) at second if the check-swing was ruled a strike (swing).

By the way, check-swing appeal was properly ruled no swing on this play, but the umpire was ready at second.

Some 2 man mechanics from New hampshire Umpire’s Association

On these two clips, here's what I liked:

1. BU, get the banger right at 1B
2. BU's proper use of eyes to F3's glove to view firm and secure possession before calling BR out

Yes it has... only college ball that hasn't started in my area is JuCo and thats even with all the wet weather.

I know it has started. While I didn't say it, I was referring to MLB. That's not the point of the post.

My bad. Sorry. One week away (next Saturday) from starting my season here and I'm starting to chomp at the bit a little.
