pitch speed/radar gun

Recommended Posts

How much does a pitch slow down from its release point to the plate? How does a radar gun work, at what point does it measure the velocity?

motoUmp,

On average, a pitch will slow 1 mph for every 7' traveled from the pitcher's hand to the catcher's mitt. (Approx. 6-7 mph from pitcher's release to batter's hitting zone on a regulation field.)

Most radar "guns" are designed to measure the speed of the pitch near it's release point. Depends on the operator to a degree.

How much cooler would it have been if I stood right where the balls come out instead of 60'6" away?

Some think it'd be even cooler if you stood a few feet behind where the balls come out and called the game from there. :sarcasm:
