I called honigs today, he said they're closing out on them because MiLB is changing shirts next year. The guy wouldn't give specifics because I don't know if he can, but I'm guessing their switching to black shirts next year. That would be exciting.

Yeh, there are some leagues that still use the navy blue.

Oddly enough I caught a San Jose Giants game this year (Class A California League) in which the plate guy had on a navy shirt and the base umpire had a black jacket on. It was a little strange.

Well each minor league uses navy blue shirts. It's then the leagues discretion whether there will be patches or embroidered logos on the pocket. It's also he league who decides what kinds of jackets minor league umpires wear and if light blue shirts are allowed.

For instance the International League uses just solid blue jackets while the Pacific Coast Leauge uses the new style navy jacket with red and white stripes on the shoulders. The New York-Penn League uses the new convertible jackets where the sleeves zip off.

So I'm guessing the navy blue is out the window and MiLB is pushing MLB colors.

It does make sense that that would be so would it not? We are all following behind the MLB trends. Lets not forget that it was but a short 15 or so years ago that the new navy shirts came down the road and the ebelco shirts got fazed out. Then they brought in the alternative red (AL) and light blue (NL) shirts. Then they went to the black and people were in an uproar about the change in colors (Im guessing because we all want to be identified with the MLB guys and we just went out and bought Navy and Red and Light Blue).

Now we all accept Black as the standard color of baseball umpires. Cream has come and gone (but still a favorite of mine) and the MLB Blue (or what ever you want to call it) is the norm as the alternative for black.

Its kind of just the way it is and Im surprised that it took so long for MiLB to follow along with the color change.

So did he not tell you what sizes they are?

I wish that the NFHS would "awaken"....Softball umpires can wear the Light blue or powder shirts, but not us...NO offense intended to softball umpires, rather that it looks like at least one department there might have had their morning coffee at least...:smachhead:

Out here, we are allowed to wear what ever colors we want. As long as we match. The only thing now is that they are moving to charcoal pants only starting this year. I have both but am more than happy to look better wearing charcoal.

However, once you get to the semi-finals or finals, I believe that its Navy and Charcoal. I could be wrong... especially since I havent made it that high.

In my parts, we also can wear whatever color we want, as long as we match. I'd go nuts having to wear navy every single game.

MiLB is switching to black in 2010. As for the flag, Honig's has its name embroidered on the back of the collar. That needed to be covered. The flag was the solution. The flag has been on the shirts to my knowledge since 911. BTW Honigs will be updating their chest protector line in 2010. I will keep ya posted.

Im a little curious what they have planned. Ive been saying for a long time they need to have the plastic plate on the out side of the CP. I think they would sell a whole heck of a lot more if they do that.

I like to wear gray as the light colored alternate whenever possible.

I don't know why, but I hate h.s. powder blue, but I like the MLB polo blue. I like the gray even more, though.

OK, it's September, my season doesn't resume for 2 weeks, so it's time for Full Disclosure, and let the chips fall....

....I saw those tie-dye shirts about a year ago, and, after the same reactions as you guys, sat back and said , "Y'know..."

We had a Rec Ball Halloween Tournament (titled, "Field of Screams", if you must know), and about a dozen of us ordered these shirts for the Tournament. We kept it quiet, and,the morning of the first games, we all walked up the driveway into the complex together, and took our respective fields.

The crowds went wild. They absolutely loved them, and they generated comments as "hey, uh, blue/yellow/red/orange," to (as I jokingly addressed a vociferous spectator), "Sir, you're going to have to be dressed in a better shirt before you can Umpire out here!" People were running home for the cameras, and we made it into the local newspaper.

So, go ahead and flame: we had a great time with them, (and will most likely use them again this October.) BTW, dont bother asking where I got them: they went out of business last spring.

I just got gray this summer but only a few guys around here have it.

I've grown to really despise cream and not dislike navy as much. I'd wear navy over cream any time.

Right, I don't like it either, the striping doesn't go with it at all. But that's like me a umpire numbers on my navy shirts. I hate straight red over white, it looks cheap and chincy no matter how you design it. But I like red over blue/white, looks much better.

There are so many colors and so many vendors out there now, that some will be wearing colors they never would have thought about. Conversely, there will be some so closed minded, they won't want to change.
