While talking with my partner during our pre-game meeting, he was furious with the fact that in his previous game with another umpire, his non-strike call was overturned by the base umpire. Here is how he explained it. Batter squared to bunt, stood still and did not make an attempt at the ball in his opinion. Defensive coach come out and asks him if he can ask his partner for help to see if there was an actual attempt. He then told the coach that it was his judgement call and no one else. Well the base umpire then comes over and tells the coach that he did make an attempt and it should be a strike. Note that the plate umpire never asked for help. He was furious with the fact that his partner had come over without being signaled by him for help to give his opinion with the call. So in the end the pitch was overturned to a strike. He told his partner after the game that he should not ever do that again unless he asks for help. Who is in the wrong here? I told him that his partner should have never done that. Thoughts???

Hey. I have umpired for 6 years now, and I am comfortable with my strike zone. I do admit, it IS a little small, but it is consistent. I sometimes do lower level games, and my association says to make my strike zone bigger. I don't think of it, it just happens. When I try to consciously change it, it becomes incredibly inconsistent. Any thoughts how to change my strike zone?

Is there any different way to judge ball/strike on a knuckleball? I stand in a box position with my head in the slot, but I still have a hard time judging the movement.

This has occurred with me behind the plate three times this year alone. I’m still not sure I handled it correctly. In both a LL (x2) and HS game, runners on 1B and 2B, less than 2 outs. The Batter gets a called strike three, which then gets by the Catcher. I clearly motion and loudly call him out, however with everyone screaming a plethora of commands (“Run, he dropped the ball!â€, “He’s out!â€, “You call that a strike?â€, etc.) the Batter-Runner takes off for first full speed and the Catcher gets the ball and throws it past the 1B. Chaos ensues: the Runners don’t know what to do, so they’re advancing (albeit hesitantly), the defensive coach is yelling that the Batter-Runner distracted his fielders by running when he was out, and the offensive coaches are yelling out contradictory commands to the base Runners (“Run!†vs. “Get back!â€). One of my Field Umpires called time and ruled it “Distraction†saying that the Batter-Runner caused the chaos in the first place, and he sent everyone back to where they were (except the Batter). Both coaches seemed pacified, yet I asked him after the game where that was in the rule book, and he just mumbled something about being fair to the spirit of the rules. What should I have done in these circumstances?
