  1. I'm curious to know which levels use 3-umpire mechanics on a consistent basis. Right now, I am a high school umpire who gets occasional 3-umpire experience through playoff games and camps. I would love to move up to eventually work Division I games, but before I reach that level, I will need to have experience working 3-umpire games (and at least a basic working knowledge of 4-umpire mechanics, since some conferences at the D1 level use 4 umpires for regular season conference games, as well as all D1 postseason games outside of the College World Series). The $64,000 question is where I can get that experience. AFAIK, junior college, like high school, uses 2 umpires for the regular season, with 3 in the playoffs. Do Division III or Division II use 3 umpires in the regular season? If so, I'll ask the local DIII and DII conferences about trying out in the next few years. Is there any non-scholastic baseball (preferably in the Mid-Atlantic region), such as Babe Ruth or American Legion that consistently uses 3 umpires? AFAIK, all of the rec or travel leagues I have serviced use 2 umpires, and I haven't gotten any invites to work as an unpaid 3rd. Of course, if I get hired to call affiliated professional baseball, this will be irrelevant, because I will be exposed to 3-man at the lower levels for postseason assignments, and consistently at the AA level. Is the 3 umpire crew standard in independent professional baseball, or is it a league-by-league thing (ALPB uses 3, but the Can-Am League does not)?
  2. I'm having some trouble with the tag attempt after a uncaught third strike (u3k) and batted balls in front (or on) the plate. I almost always move to the left for any play (batted ball, bunt, u3k, etc.). I have been straight-lined a couple of times recently on the catcher's tag of the BR, and couldn't judge whether there was contact for a tag or not. I'm debating whether I should be moving to the right to get between the catcher and batter and see the tag attempt more clearly. What is the proper mechanic to be in position to see the tag on u3k or even a batted ball right in front of the plate? Should I move left or right to get the best view of the play? Does it depend on whether the batter is right- or left-handed? On a ground ball to the infield, I clear the catcher to the left and trail the BR up to first base. On a fly ball, I step to the left and potentially gain distance toward the fielder making the catch. On a bunt, I move to the left to watch for BR/Catcher interaction and then rule fair/foul (depending on the location). About the only time I move to the right is a sharp hit down the third base line. In other words, I'm conditioned to move to the left on just about every play. If I need to be moving to the right, how can I best change my behavior? Thanks!
  3. Last night I was watching Greg Gibson work the plate. From my vantage point (not terribly close, down LF line) I noticed that he seems to initially set up a bit behind F2, then as F1 is about to release, he leans way forward and almost puts his chin on F2's inside shoulder. It was then that I realized that although he wears a bucket, he doesn't use a throat guard, and his neck is very much exposed when using that "look in" thing that he does.
  4. R3, 1 out, Fly ball to F8. Runner tags...and here is what happened. I know you want me on 3BX, but I have always done 1BX and can't break the habit. Offensive coach was asking about blocking the plate without the ball. I felt that F2 gave the back of the plate. I made the out call after seeing the ball. Any comments?
  5. Hi Guys, this fall I've had an unusually high number of Jr. High games that I have had to work as a 1 man crew due to rainouts. Do any of you have any specific tips or help for working these games? I know there will always be an area that doesn't get covered as well as others, but I want to do my absolute best even in these less than ideal situations. Thanks in advance for your help!
  6. Had an interesting thing happen this past weekend at a clinic. We all know that balk rules differ from rule book to rule book. So here's the question: 1. How do you verbalize a balk call, and...2. What physical mechanic do you use when you call it? We got several different responses from our college instructors...I'd like to hear what you all think!!
  7. I worked with a young umpire recently who when working the plate called pitches 'ball high' 'ball low' 'ball inside'. He didn't do this consistently, only on borderline (apparently to him) pitches. After the game when he asked for feedback I told him this was not proper mechanics, as it invited "no, it wasn't' comments from coaches. He informed me that he went to a umpire school (name withheld) and he was taught this was the proper mechanic. He also referred to 3 NCAA College World Series umpires who allegedly used the same mechanic. Maybe I am just an old fart, but this doesn't make any sense. Why invite second-guessing? I'd be interested if any D-I umpires have been advised this is a proper mechanic. Thanks in advance.

    Do you need 3-man mechanics?

Here is a link to a pdf. of the PBUC 3-man manual. Enjoy! '>
  9. Let me start off with the foul tip mechanic/signal. The only TRUE time this would ever come into necessity would be when a batter checks his swing and the ball hits the bat. Then the foul tip mechanic would be useful. But most times it is not. If the catcher drops a ball that hits the bat and goes directly to his hand or mitt, it becomes "foul". If the catcher hangs on to it, then it is just a "strike". (2 man) - The "Timing" signal is pointless since the BU has basically NOTHING to do with the timing play in and of itself. It is all on the PU. So why does the BU have to signal by pointing to his wrist?
  10. This is the banner they give us on our Provincial (yes, I'm Canadian) baseball association. I find the positioning to be a way too far back and maybe to high, but this is the picture we see when we go to the site. Thoughts? (if it doesn't show a plate umpire, just refresh until it comes up.) http://www.baseballontario.com/umpires/

  12. Whether you love or hate Little League, the next couple of weeks gives us a great chance to watch on TV those who choose umpiring as an avocation. These are folks that have, in many cases, been volunteering for 20+ years and were selected to umpire in the LLWS. They may not always be the "best" that LL has to offer, but they are among the most dedicated. Use this thread to post your observations - the good, the bad, and the ugly. There may be situations that need their own thread, but this is a good place to post things you see that you wouldn't start a new thread to discuss. Here's the full TV schedule for those who want to see some games: http://www.littleleague.org/worldseries/tvlistingsFULL.htm There are a bunch of regional games being broadcast over the next 4 days, with the LLWS starting up on 8/15.
  13. Ok, just something I've noticed, so no one get all wigged out ..... I'm simply asking a question.   I've noticed MLB mechanics following a pattern for an 'out' call.   Both feet always stay planted, ...as if their nailed to the ground.  I first noticed (I think it was) Jordan Baker, but recently, I've noticed a few other guys (usually the younger guys) doing the same thing.   Is this being taught?   Again, ...just wondering...it's no big deal...........       Haid' ....  anyone else?   Here's Mike Mulchinski http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30470763&topic_id=9782246   Here's Jordan Baker http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30477123&topic_id=9782246 actually , in this one his back leg swings a little  bit ....
  14. Is there any different way to judge ball/strike on a knuckleball? I stand in a box position with my head in the slot, but I still have a hard time judging the movement.
  15. I was hoping I could get some crew signals. I have a few basic ones, but I would like some more. All I know now is: Infield fly situation: Hand to the chest with the right hand or finger to the brim of the cap. Time Play: Hands out to the side with two fingers out. "I've got third": Right thumb and pinky extended waving back and forth. Anything? Thanks
  16. ** I HAVE NOT SEARCHED OTHER THREADS FOR THIS ANSWER, I APOLOGIZE IN ADVANCE ** Case Play -- CWS Final Game 1 -- F1 clearly balks, 1-2 seconds pass and UIC nails it, IMO the timing was excellent. Problem Statement: How do you use the proper timing and mechainc in lower level ball. -- That was the College World Series, the coaches actually coach and most know the rules and etiquette of baseball. In lower levels, especially High School Varsity games in my area we have an issue with Coaches and Balks. Example: F1 clearly balks, immediately OC yells from 3rd base "that's a balk, come on that's a balk" before the umpire can make the decision or call it. Many umpires including myself on occassion will hesitate to make that call after the coach has yelled it first because it gives off the impression that the coached lead us into the call. It if was blatantly obvious I'd still make the call because the entire ball park knew it was a balk. Question: How do others handle Coaches and Balk mechanics? I have in the past, called the Balk, placed the runners and then approached the coach and given a warning for using the term "Balk". This tends to lend itself into more argument or discussion which I'd like to avoid. I've also seen some "old timers" say pretty funny things like " Well doggone Coach, I'm glad you saw that balk and the rest of us missed it, I didn't know you were that good!!!" How do you guys handle this type of situation??
  17. I am sure this post is somewhere but I can not find it....... Does anyone have any idea on Camps avaliable this summer through fall? I have signed up for the Mid-American Umpire clinic and am interested in attending additional camps in the Mid South (Atlanta, Nashville, St. Louis areas). Please share your camp or clinics with dates! Thanks!
  18. Question ....   Is this proper mechanics for catcher's inteference (using the 'foul tip' mechanic) ??   Honest question...........   Sometimes I see it, sometimes I don't ....   http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=24929703&topic_id=&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_24929703&v=3   http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=24929703&topic_id=&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_24929703&v=3
  19. Hi guys. I'm a youth umpire, and am looking for feedback on my plate mechanics, timing, and basically anything else you can think of. Please don't be too harsh about my attire, because as a youth ump, I really don't have enough money to buy my own equipment, so I just use what the league provides. Any suggestions about affordable equipment, however, would be most welcome. Here are a few videos of me working the plate in a PONY game (11-12 yr olds). Please comment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfXOVl7ai1c
  20. Came across this video from the WBC. What is the proper mechanic for this play? When both tag and plate were missed, should the UIC have signaled nothing until the tag was finally made? Making that "safe" call initially doesn't make much sense to me. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25647757&topic_id=41639656 I did think the play-by-play call was quite amusing: "Safe initially, now tagged out at the plate!"
  21. I'm glad to be back! The PowerPoint is attached on here somewhere. If you have any trouble with it, just let me know. Changes include: bat alterations, coaches electronic equipment and video usage, and extra warm-up throws. POE's cover Legal/Illegal pitching positions, pace of play, compliant bats, risk minimalization, and good sporting behavior. Mechanics changes: Elimination of the delayed dead ball signal, and repositioning for U2 with runners on 1B and 3B. In the "Notes" in Normal view on PowerPoint are some additional, well, notes on a lot of the topics. EDIT 2/10: I had to clear the actual PPT to clear some file space, but you can get to from my Google Drive here: http://goo.gl/CT1xv . It SHOULD work on PC's, tablets, and phones, and if you have any problems with it, let me know. If you'd like the "real" PPT, just PM me and I'll send it to you.
  22. Good movement, vision, and a point at the tag .... http://www.mlb.com/v...136269&c_id=mlb http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25136269&topic_id=&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_25136269&v=3
  23. From watching a whole bunch of clips on this site, I've noticed something really strange. It seems that some MLB umpires aren't set when the pitch is delivered. In this clip for example, Jerry Layne is still moving down when the pitch is already on its way. http://mlb.mlb.com/n...ws_mlb&c_id=mlb Is this some sort of advanced mechanic?

    Umpire mechanics help

I was hoping I could get some help with this situation and the proper positioning for it. 2 man crew. Runners on 1st and third. I am in the C position. Runner on 1st stealing. Cathcher throws down, but not to second, but rather to the SS cutting towards and in front of the bag to get the runner advancing from third. As I turn to follow the ball, I realize the throw is coming towards me. How should I handle this play- drop down, go backwards or forwards and is there a specific mechanic to alleviate being in this situation. It happened twice to me this season, so I suspect I am doing something wrong here. Thanks for the help.
  25. Anybody planning on attending the 2012 Southern Umpires camp in Atlanta this February? If so, I can save you some money on tuition. I was all set to go to the Southern camp last year and, due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to attend. This year wont work for me either due to scheduling, and, to the fact that I had the opportunity to go to the MLBUC in Compton a couple of weeks ago. I still have a 325.00 deposit posted for the Southern camp that i would be happy to transfer to somebody for 260.00...(20% savings). PM me if interested.
