  1. Anyone who is looking to get a job in minor league baseball should look into attending O.U.T.S. Run by Bob Bainter. The chief instructor is Brent Rice who is also the lead instructor at Wendelstedt. We have had the top returning student 6 years running. We place 27 umpires in the Northwoods league during the summer. That is the premier wood bat College league. Our camp is 10 days in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Registration is now open. You do not need to have attended a school. However, we prefer that you want to. Certainly, will not preclude you from getting a placement. We will have many special guests. Reps from the App league, Northwoods, Atlantic league, Frontier league. More to come. Please visit our website. http://www.oceansideumpiretraining.com/

  3. This absolute gem addresses two topics... First, the whole topic of Calling or Granting Time (Topic: Granting Time), and how we as umpires really should not call time unless absolutely necessary. For any coach viewing this, this is the way you teach your ballplayers on defense to act... not calling "Time!" to throw the ball back to the pitcher 10 feet away. The HBT can never happen out of a dead-ball situation!!! Second, umpires... give special attention to U1. Notice where he positions himself after the single by #12 and his recovery to the bag. Notice the poker face he wears, and notice how he responds with the Out mechanic without hesitation or surprise, as if he anticipated that tag happening. Why? Because he knew exactly where the ball was!!! Knowing the whereabouts and status of the ball (in that order) is the #1 priority of an umpire. Even if Time had been called, the umpires should be aware of where the ball is (Topic: Live vs Dead, HBT etc.). Thus, if (during a dead-ball instance) the ball ends up in F3's glove, the PU cannot put the ball back in Play until it is back in F1's possession, on the rubber, ready to pitch. And, in parallel, U1 won't be punching out poor Mister Nunez on F3's attempted tag... because that ball ain't Live.
  4. Petty, I know, trust me ....but ....   Has anyone noticed the amount of guys who point their strike call (most) use 2 fingers when it's the second strike?   WHY?  I don't know why this bothers me, but why does almost every MLB and MiLB umpire do this?  So many of them do this, I have to assume it's something that's suggested during training?   Does anyone know?   AGAIN, ...I know it's petty, and it's not important, but I was just curious to know .....   example:

  7. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Professional Baseball Umpire Corp (PBUCâ„¢), a Minor League Baseballâ„¢ wholly owned subsidiary, announced Wednesday that it extended offers of employment to 31 of the 60 candidates that attended its recently completed Evaluation Course held at Vero Beach Sports Villageâ„¢ in Vero Beach, Fla. Fourteen others were recommended for hire to the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer league, with which PBUC has a working agreement. These umpires will continue to hone their skills while waiting for the call to work Minor League Baseball games.   http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130327&content_id=43396022&vkey=pr_&fext=.jsp&sid= Anybody we know???   Historically U-E members have done pretty well.
