Types/Levels of Baseball called

  1. Amongst umpire crews trialling the (purported) new 2015 shirts, Dale Scott's crew has gone Classic. He's doing Classic black w/ twin white pencil lines on the collar... Long-sleeve. His crew is employing the full black jacket w/ Sky and white shoulder stripes. Good look. Must be chilly on the Bay tonight.
  2. The Force3 mask received the call up to the Majors during today July 4th. Miami Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals game by MLB umpire Todd Tichenor. Congratulations to Tichenor for engraving his name in the umpire equipment history books and congratulations to the Force3 developers and brand owners. The hard work put together is paying of.
  3. So, from a memo sent out by MLB to broadcast rights-holders, some troubling details on replay and how it will work this year: "Managers who are out of challenges may request that the Crew Chief review a play in the 7th inning or later". In other words, if you're out of challenges...you might not be out of challenges. If you've lost two challenges, why do you deserve another? Shouldn't there be SOME penalty for being bad at challenges?? So there's no limits to challenges? Or more arguments and ejections if challenges aren't accepted? I bet that will go down well. "Managers may argue plays or request that umpires convene to discuss a play without invoking a challenge." WHAT?!? Wasn't this supposed to *reduce* the clown acts?!? Is baseball simply too short and action-packed that we have to have replays AND arguments? Why does this need to be so complicated? Note: contents of memo reported by Dan Bernstein, Chicago sports talk host at 670 am (broadcast partner for White Sox)

    Instant Replay

So we had 3 uses of instant replay today, 2 in TOR at MIN (ss), one with LAA at ARZ. Thoughts? http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/in-first-test-of-expanded-replay-call-is-upheld?ymd=20140303&content_id=68627570&vkey=news_mlb

    Which rule takes precedent?

Question about MLB rules: I thought about this little conundrum after a 2013 game in which a pitcher was substituted before he faced one batter ( Rule 3.05 (b) says that a pitcher must face at least one hitter before he can come out of the game, unless he's injured. The pitcher in the game was not injured, so taking him out before facing a batter was a violation of the rule. BUT what if Bo Porter (the manager who made the illegal switch), simply went back to the mound a second time? Bruce Bochy caught Don Mattingly a few years back trying to make a second trip to the mound to the same pitcher in the same inning, requiring Mattingly to change pitchers on the spot ( So if I'm a manager, I bring in a new pitcher, see that the opposing manager is putting in a pinch hitter, and decide that I want ANOTHER new pitcher. The rules state that I cannot take him out yet, since he's not hurt, and he hasn't faced a batter, so instead, I circumvent the rule, leave the mound, and immediately get right back on. Do I have to change the pitcher, or can I not change the pitcher?
  6. Just looking through some videos. Here is one.

    MLB Umpire hats

Does anyone know what stitch hats MLB umpires wear behind the plate and on the bases? Is is 4 stitch behind the plate, and 6 stitch on the bases?

  9. Up for sale are 3 pair of MLB pants size 37. These pants are from crew chief Jeff Kellogg. On the tag it says "8 Kellogg". Unfortunately they fit me too big, I hate to sell them but they are hung in my closet not seeing baseball. Make me a offer only paypal accepted. These pants are in great used shape. I say used because they do not have tags. By looking at them and based on the quality they appear to be new.
  10. Ok, just something I've noticed, so no one get all wigged out ..... I'm simply asking a question.   I've noticed MLB mechanics following a pattern for an 'out' call.   Both feet always stay planted, ...as if their nailed to the ground.  I first noticed (I think it was) Jordan Baker, but recently, I've noticed a few other guys (usually the younger guys) doing the same thing.   Is this being taught?   Again, ...just wondering...it's no big deal...........       Haid' ....  anyone else?   Here's Mike Mulchinski http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30470763&topic_id=9782246   Here's Jordan Baker http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30477123&topic_id=9782246 actually , in this one his back leg swings a little  bit ....
  11. Travled to Kansas City for their game against Baltimore last night (7/22). The Orioles won 9-2 in kind of an uneventful game, but none the less, it turned out to be a great time spent with my father. It has been a while since the last time I had the chance to go to a MLB game, so I enjoyed every bit of it. C.B. Bucknor was behind the plate, Crew Chief Dale Scott was at 1B, Bill Miller at 2B, and at 3B was Todd Tichenor. After the game however, I had the opportunity to meet the umpire crew!! After standing outside of the roped-off "Home Plate Gate" for almost an hour after the game, chatting with other fans and finding out this is where the umps walk out of, they finally appeared. Todd Tichenor is from Kansas, and had family at the game, so he did not leave with the other crew members. This absolutely made my night and I was so grateful that they stopped to talk to me for a few minutes. C.B. was such a nice guy, as was Dale Scott too. Bill Miller kind of walked on to start their car, but CB and Dale both stood to talk to me for a few minutes. They both were excited to hear I was going to TUS in January and wished me the best of luck. Scott said, "Well hopefully I'll be retired in 10 years so you can have my spot!" Haha! I wish! Only time will tell. Overall, awesome experience to meet these wonderful guys. Thought you all would enjoy! Anyone have pictures/met any MLB guys? Here is our picture:
  12. Like most others, I have the Powder Blue (also called Columbia Blue) shirt w/ white and navy stripe. I'd like to get another, and then was puzzled to find a new shade of blue... Slightly darker Carolina Blue w/ black trim. Right next to it, the Columbia Blue w/ black trim. There's also the Powder (Columbia) Blue w/ white and red trim, but I've been told that's a softball color, and a faux pas to wear (as in, don't). Lastly, there's the new MLB pattern, of all Powder blue (with vertical black piping). Which should I be buying? Would a difference between Carolina and Columbia -blue be that noticeable on-field in youth baseball? Is it totally faux pas to wear the MLB pattern if your partner(s) isn't (aren't)? Is it faux pas to wear MLB pattern if you're not an MLB umpire umpiring less-than-MLB games? The fishbowl for this would be someplace like CDP, where I realize someone always has an opinion on something, but I just want to reduce the (possibility of) snide remarks.

  14. Another good example of taking a play from Third Base Line Extended. And the adjustment the catcher had to make to get the tag. You get a nice view of what Welke sees in one of the angles shown.    http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26180085&topic_id=vtp_must_c&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_26180085&v=3
  15. Pretty easy call especially when the arm went up like that...   http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=26170397&topic_id=&c_id=mlb&tcid=vpp_copy_26170397&v=3
  16. Hey guys, from yesterdays Tigers v. Blue Jays game I'm watching and I see Angel has a Snap-Back Hat on...I didn't know that this was even an option.
  17. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=25581415&c_id=mlb The play is pretty cut and dry. It's obvious Byrnes never touches the plate and Varitek retrieves the ball and tags him out. My question is the push from Byrnes as Varitek is headed to the backstop. Would anyone consider calling interference on a play like that? Especially if the push would have been enough to put a catcher on the ground. The umpire here seems to stand up as it happens. Looks like he is thinking about something here but realizes Byrnes isn't going to attempt to come back to touch the plate. Nothing terribly interesting here. Just food for thought. Maybe a little discussion.
  18. Matheny: MLB should do away with home-plate collisions FORT MYERS, Fla. • Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, who earned a hard-nosed reputation for his play behind the plate during a Gold Glove career at catcher, said that he no longer believes collisions at home plate have a place in baseball. He believes the danger is too great and the rule book should change so that head-hunting culture does, too. http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/cardinal-beat/matheny-mlb-should-do-away-with-home-plate-collisions/article_09be35e9-626a-54b7-840f-81e208d1d4ba.html [Terry Francona disagrees] Home-plate collisions prompt debate for Terry Francona, Cardinals' Mike Matheny: Cleveland Indians Insider By Paul Hoynes, Plain Dealer February 27, 2013 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- Terry Francona respects St. Louis manager Mike Matheny, but doesn't agree that home-plate collisions should be removed from the game. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2013/02/home-plate_collisions_prompt_d.html
  19. I hadn't seen this before. Its pretty cool http://youtu.be/j82GwtwcdPc
  20. Dale Scott (where's the title edit button ) was one of the speakers at our Officiate Oregon Day a few weekends ago. I was amazed at his height - about 5'7" and umpiring pro ball. Cool. Question came up about how often, if ever, MLB umpires use humor during a game. Dale shared two stories: When he first broke into the majors, he was working a game with catcher Rick Cerrone. Cerrone wanted to feel out the rookie umpire. With Cerrone catching, Dale balls a close, low pitch. Cerrone: Come on, we gotta have that pitch. Dale: No, that's down." Another borderline pitch, "ball." Cerrone: That's right there, come on. Dale: No, that's down. A few innings later, Cerrone comes up to bat. Sure enough there's a similar borderline low pitch." "Strike!" Cerrone: "Oh come on, that pitch is low!" Dale: "That's what I've been trying to tell you!" --------------------- Another umpire was working an MLB game where the starting pitcher gave up FOUR consecutive home runs to the home team. They're at a stadium where a ship cannon is "fired" after a home-team HR. First HR - boom! cannon shot. Next batter, HR, boom! cannon shot. And so on. After the fourth HR, the home plate umpire decides to walk the ball out to the pitcher. He gets to the mound and the pitcher asks him what he's doing out there. "Well, with the crap you're throwing today, I figured I'd give them time to re-load the cannon."
  21. http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=21720141&c_id=mlb Was looking at some balk videos on MLB. This was a no balk, but I'm pretty sure he balk at LEAST once, probably twice. Did he go to his mouth while on the rubber? Then clearly no stop. Anyone know if this protest was even looked at, or did Detroit win?
  22. Fellow Umpires, I dont want to bash Jim at ump-attire.com, but he just lost me as customer. Everyone says they have great CS. Until you need to return something. I have easily spent over a $1000 through his site in the last year alone. These shoes don't fit me, so I tried returning them to Jim, but he sent them back claiming they are used. I am honest, they have never been used, other than a brief 20 yard sprint outside on my clean lawn. How else can you tell if they fit properly without testing them? I have attached pictures and can take more upon request. $90 shipped to your door... Please PM me and if you want me to send you higher quality pix than you see here. Thanks ump-attire.
  23. From watching a whole bunch of clips on this site, I've noticed something really strange. It seems that some MLB umpires aren't set when the pitch is delivered. In this clip for example, Jerry Layne is still moving down when the pitch is already on its way. http://mlb.mlb.com/n...ws_mlb&c_id=mlb Is this some sort of advanced mechanic?
  24. Interesting article on ESPN.com today. Summary: MLB wants to change 3rd to 1st pick off move, make it a balk. Who thinks this will actually get done? Good idea? Bad idea? http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7915369/major-league-baseball-poised-pick-1st-3rd-trick-move
