  1. Hey guys, I ordered a Force3 Defender mask from UA about a month ago and I am enjoying it thoroughly! I have started to look into ordering replacement pads and a Wilson harness for the mask, but I realized I do not know what version of the mask (V1 or V2) that UA sent to me. I noticed on the Force3 website that replacement pads are only sold for the V1 as far as I can tell, but I do not know which version I have. Is there any way to distinguish between the two different versions of the mask? Looking at pictures, the masks seem almost identical.

  4. Just arrived this afternoon: Yup, that’s a Diamond DFM-iX3-Pro. For catchers. In aluminum. It weighs nothing. I gotta say, the pads on this thing, as simple as they are, are better than the default pads on the Umpire version (not the DFM-UMP-BL)! In any case, it’s strong, light, and offers a rather generous eyeport. It won’t bend. The only reason this didn’t really gain traction with catchers is because it’s not an All-Star or UnderArmour, or Nike, or Easton (who all use titanium or steel), and the NFHS codes prohibit them. Without them carried on retail shelves, they’re only order-able online, where they get undercut by insanely cheap steel masks (Rawlings, Wilsons and MacGregors) or overlooked in favor of the name-brand starlets (Easton, UnderArmour, All-Star). I ordered this mask in for one of my fellow umpires who is using an old TAG -brand steel, bent like a coat hanger would be to be used as a TV antenna. I have a black harness for it, and we’ll be teaming this up with +POS tan leather pads... which should be arriving any day now. Oh yeah, the price? Ordered direct from Diamond, $30.
  5. I'm sitting in a Texas Roadhouse after calling 9 baseball games over the past 3 days in 117°+ Arizona heat, watching the Mets get shellacked yet again by the Dodgers, when I notice the camera zoom way, way, waaaaaayyyyy in on Travis d'Arnaud and the Force3 Defender mask he's wearing. Travis is new to the Defender TM, having previously used the Mizuno Samurai HSM. The Samurai is one of the most thoroughly padded HSMs on the market, but doesn't get enough play besides the sleeker, more sculpted All-Star System 7's and Easton M-series. With the camera zoomed in on the telltale, trademark springs of the Defender, I begin reading the closed captioning of the two ESPN broadcasters discussing the details of the mask, and how it is progressively suited to reducing impact force and the likelihood of concussions. The camera pans to show all three spring points, and even shows the profile shape, with the broadcasters pointing out the standoff distance. They go on to say several catchers in the league are now using it, and there is now a hockey-style version on the market (the Defender HSM). In a move of directorial brilliance (the guy in the truck should get an Emmy nomination), the camera then pans to zoom in on Lance Barksdale as PU for tonight's game... wearing a Wilson Titanium Low Profile... with Wilson leather wraparound pads... Sigh. Facepalm. The broadcasters then contrast the Defender TM against the Wilson TiLP, and how little protection it affords the umpire. Barksdale's nose is on the verge of poking out of the eyeport, and the mask is nearly flat on his face. One of the broadcasters laments, "I never saw the point of that mask". #TimeForChange #GetWiseOffWilson #OtherOptionsExist #HeadInTheGame
  6. What kind of mask does Jeff Nelson wear? And I don't know how to get a pic of it.
  7. While cleaning up some old gear for our league, I came across a bunch of old masks. Not the best, but they work. But most of them had the old plastic belt harness. So In order to make them usable again, I discovered that Honig's is selling their Red harness for $1. Yes, it's red, but it's a dollar. So if you are a league looking to make some gear usable, this might not be a bad alternative. Probably not the look everyone is looking for, but it's a much better harness than what we had.
  8. If this doesn't convince you, I don't know what will. medium.MOV
  9. Mariners @ A’s Is Jimbo donning yet another mask?? Perhaps my man @Scott K can help. https://photos.app.goo.gl/uIhnVzc6luNtRLja2 P.S. Sorry for the bad quality. And for those who haven’t noticed (because it hasn’t been obvious, of course ) I’m a huge fan of Wolf. Also, I think he’s wearing the 460v3s low. (Correct me if in wrong)
  10. I’m sure you all could help me sort this mess out. Are these all the same model? (The one with the black pads on UA looks like it has a longer chin guard and glossier) And if so, why does Tumpane’s look huge?
  11. Looking to trade unused Wilson mask since I don't see myself putting it to use in the near future. Thanks! oji185]
  12. Ok ...here we go ... I found an old West Vest frame on ebay last year. I had it fixed (right upper ear) and powder coated by Tony at Mask-it a dull-ish plain old non-metallic gray which I think turned out great. I used this frame last year for high school as you see in the photo (Michigan is still Navy required). I'm keeping everything but the frame. I've got more than $50 into this right now, but I'll let it go for $50. PM me if interesting (frame only) Paypal friends and family
  13. As a rule I don't wear shades behind the plate. I've seen the piece that goes in the mask, the visor. What are your thoughts on that piece of equipment? Specifically - Is it worth trying out? Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Brent CAUA Umpire Arkansas
  14. Hi all ..... Well ......It's time for one of my masks to go. I now have 4 and it's tough to decide, but ...my original All-Star custom job is the one I've decided on. This was done by Tony at Mask-It ... Matte black, and he took the " i-bar vision" tag off for me also. On here is an All-Star sunshield and gray/silver LMX pads. Gray vinyl on the outside, tan leather on the inside. The FM25 is a work horse! Known as a catchers mask but anyone who's used them know that first, yes, it IS a dual bar mask, but you don't notice it because of the iBar vision bars (flat), and .... VERY light for a hollow steel mask. Plus, it's durable as a M4A1 Sherman! Throat guard I'm keeping (it's in the photo, but I'm keeping it) LMX pads are used, but not very much ...still in good shape! I have over $100 in this rig .... PM me with offers please. Paypal Friends and family
  15. DJ Reyburn changed his mask for a military type
  16. Does anyone have either of these masks and if so, can you please provide feedback on them? Thanks.
  17. Hey all, Up for sale is my Nike Titanium mask. This thing is in GREAT shape. Only worn for about 1 season, and has been treated like royalty. This thing pretty much looks brand new. I'm looking to get $330 plus shipping. Send via paypal as friend. Selling frame only. I do have another thread open with some other stuff for sale... bundle some stuff together and I'm sure we can work out a price discount. PM me if your interested. Thanks!
  18. The question about the Carlucci chest protector material sparked the inspiration for this thread. I will start saying that I like the leather for my pads.
  19. http://www.force3progear.com/product/pro-mask-sun-shield/ Force3 trotted out a brand-new visor for their Defender TM, and of course, it's designed to fit to the unique geometry of the Defender's upper cage. There are two tab slots instead of one, and there is a notch to accommodate the centerline mounting clip. It even has the Force3 logo (which should, and hopefully someday will, supplant the Big Yellow W) laser-engraved. ... I'm shocked I beat @gnhbua93 in this announcement. If/when I get a Defender TM, though, it will surely have one of these on it.
  20. To All, Another fantastic experience with customer service associated with our chosen Profession/Hobby! I ordered the All-Star MVP2510m (small head) Catcher/Umpire helmet on Sunday of this week (3/6/17). I received the helmet today (3/10/17). After examination of the helmet I discovered a gouge in the plastic. Almost as if they started to drill the hole for the screw in the wrong place, and purple paint on the silver guard. I contacted All-Star and spoke to Lisa. She had me send her the pictures of the defects. I let them know that I intended to use the mask as is on Tuesday. The spots aren't detrimental to the functionality of the mask. I just wanted to let them know, so they can be aware incase someone else has something like this. They advised me that they are sending me a new helmet and I can keep this one as a backup. Between All-Star and Force3, they have made this years experiences amazing getting ready for season and during the start of this season. http://all-starsports.com/mvp2500m.html Thanks All-Star!! Brent
  21. As I have mentioned before I'm a huge Jim Wolf admirer, and I noticed something different in yesterday's game, something that greatly disturbed me, something that caused me to look twice at the tv. He has a new mask. It seems like a Wilson but I'm not a 100% sure. I would surely appreciate it if you all could help me out. Thanks
  22. For the 2016 season, All-Star supplied one of its marquee sponsored catchers, Jonathan Lucroy, with a FM4000 mask. In the past, Lucroy had utilized the latest titanium models All-Star offered, typically the venerable FM25. This particular FM4000 looked a bit strange, though, appearing to have tin-foil clad ear struts and some of the cleanest welds I'd ever seen. That last photo, from the side, those bars look kinda... bloated... for being hollow steel. Turns out, it might not be a hollow-steel FM4000 after all... Lucroy was equipped with the ultra-brand-new Magnesium FM4000MAG: http://www.baseballmonkey.com/all-star-fm4000mag-magnesium-catchers-mask.html All-Star hasn't even listed it on their site yet; but then again, they didn't publish the 2015 FM25Ti either, leaving it to forum and discussion sites to show details about it.
  23. Gentlemen, I've been lurking here for months, reading posts and admiring the knowledge of, camaraderie in, and passion for this avocation of ours. I finally have a post of my own to make. I have been working my way up in the college ranks, and it looks like I will be getting some D-I work this coming spring. As a result, I've been thinking about upgrading my equipment, specifically my mask and CP. Even the D-II and -III stuff I am have been working probably warrants an upgrade. The mask is first, as the one I have been using is a few years old, and not as heavy-duty as I think is warranted at the D-I level. The CP is good, but I will likely upgrade to a West Vest next year. So, I have narrowed the masks down to these, and would like input from the group on what would be the best choice. Diamond Pewter Grey iX3 Aluminum Umpire Mask with Quik-Dry Diamond Silver Big League Aluminum Umpire Mask with Leather Wilson Silver Dyna-Lite Aluminum Umpire Mask with Memory Foam I came to these choices because I don't want a hockey-style mask, and I don't want to drop 2 bills on a Wilson titanium. I get the feeling the Wilson is the best, but was wondering if the Diamond ix3 and Diamond Big League are equivalent (or close) for $30-$50 less. There is also this: Wilson Silver Dyna-Lite Aluminum Umpire Mask with Black and Grey which seems to be the same mask, with different pads, but this is another $30 above the memory foam padded Wilson. LOL -- And as I type that last sentence, I can hear "Why take a chance with your head and face for $30-$50?" So maybe I have my answer. But if anyone can speak to these masks, I'd love the feedback. Cheers, all!
  24. Hello all - A fellow teacher is wanting to umpire for the first time this year. Since everyone in this community is amazing, I thought I'd reach out and see if anyone has some extra equipment lying around to help get him started. I've got him hooked up with base shoes, shin guards, and ball bags that I wasn't using anymore. Here's a list of other things we're looking for (preferably at a cheap price and in good condition): Mask (just a basic Dyna-Lite if available) Chest protector (XL or 13 inch) Plate shoes (Size 13 2E would be ideal, but 13 D will work, too) Thanks! Cody
