I like their selection, but I find their web site to be dated and "clunky."  When I order from them, I'll get the item numbers of the things I want, then call them on the phone to make the order.  So far, all my orders have been complete and timely.

What is going on with Honig's?   I see from their website that they now have just two retail locations working, the original in Ann Arbor, and in Colorado (Sheridan, a suburb of Denver).

Last week (mid week) on the way to a game, I stopped by to check on some plate shoes and couple of new shirts.    Surprise!  They're closed.   Being the inquisitive type, I noted that lights were on in the showroom / office area.   Hmmmm..... across the driveway I see they have a warehouse in an adjacent building.   Over there, the lights are on, and I see someone near the door so I knock.  He answers the door, and says, "Yeah, we're closed for inventory."    Darn it.   Wasted trip.

The next day I call them (getting smarter, I am) to see if they are open.   "No, we're still closed for inventory, check back with us Friday morning."    Really?

Fast forward to yesterday (Sunday).  I'm working a double header with a guy... "in the know" about the company.  (Let's leave it at that for attribution).

He tells me that the Ann Arbor location is either closed our about to be closed, and everything in stock is being sent to the Colorado store.   Wow, now that's some news.

So today I call in to them, asking about NB plate shoes (the idea was to try on a couple of different sizes, just to be sure).    First thing they tell me is, "We are only accepting cash."  Then they say,  "No, we don't have sizes 10, 10.5 or 11 in the New Balance plate shoe."     ::::: mic drop :::::

    There's my review.

    I like Honig's a lot.

    Pros:

    • Good selection
    • I really like some of their brand of items.
    • Items ship quickly

    Cons:

    • The only negative is their website is really behind the times.

I have never had any customer service contact with them other than their tables at the NCAA clinics, but they were very nice then.

Recently I contacted Honigs concerning a pair of K20 shin guards that I bought this spring on a closeout sale.  I did not use them more than 5 times over the summer.  I noticed this fall that there was a large crack at one of the rivets on the knee cap.  I contacted Honigs and sent them some photos of the defect.  The next day they offered to credit my full purchase price and upgrade me to the new model for the difference.  This response more than met my expectations.

I have posted a review of the Honigs K2010 shin guards in the Equipment Section.

FWIW, I had the same experience with the Honigs shirts. I love their older shirts but absolutely HATE their new pakistan manufactured junk. The Majestic shirts are the exact same shirt as the old Honigs shirts. They have the lighter material and the soft cotton collar. You can get the black and polo blue for $24.95 at baseballsavings.com. You can also get the navy blue but the red and white color combination on the collar and cuffs are completely different than any other navy shirt. Now if I could only find some long sleeve Majestic shirts.

I find them to have a great selection and service. Their prices are way too high. They have been around for many years and used to be my "go to." Recently I have found some of their competition has had the same quality items for lesser prices. They have not stayed competitive due to their monopoly with college and some high school associations.

They are given all the NCAA business since you HAVE to buy Honig's Gray slacks to do an NCAA game officially. Too bad Smitty's or David gray is not allowed.

Honig's has always delivered to me the next day. I live in San Diego, so shipping is lightening fast.

I did pay nearly a C note for some poly wool plate pants. $80, plus tax and shipping brought it to $98 and change. That's a lot of dough. They were a gift, so that was okay.

Me, I got seven really nice pair off of eBay for about $120 for the lot.

Really dig Honig's. Their new selection is really toned down though. Prices were out of hand but they did lower prices on a lot of suff this year. Items delivered as promised, however two years ago they did send me the wrong item. Return was easy and free. Will and have gone back to them.

It was very very heavy compared to the old shirts (reminded me of the Cliff Keen shirts) and I felt like it was of a low quality. And they are made in Pakistan now. I was very disappointed and might just be using them for Poly-Wools and am looking for new places to pick up some shirts. I have sent the shirt back to Honig's.

Well guys, guess what. I just had a bad experience of my own.

Myself and two guys from the Portland area went to the NW office to buy some stuff for the season about a month ago. I ordered a black long sleeve shirt as well as a navy long sleeve, an indicator and a lineup card holder.

The black shirt and the indicator went on back order.

I finally got them today. One month later. And the shirt was the wrong type and size. I had ordered an XL shirt and got a L. Also it wasnt the top quality Honigs shirt that I always get (and had ordered). It was a secondary company, Pentagon, that took over for Spot-Bilt and the shirt is of such low quality that I am going to bring both of them back to Honigs when I take a trip to Salem next week.

From now on, Honigs is just for the Poly-wool pants (because I cant get them anywhere else) and if I need an indicator or plate brush or something really easy and quick.

I've been using Honigs for 4 sports for about 6 years. The service has been excellent.

My most serious complaint is that they will hit your charge card immediately even if they know they are out of stock and will not be delivering for 3 - 5 weeks.

I am fortunate that I live about an hours drive from one of the stores and can go and try things on. I can even call ahead and have something unique at the store to try.

Ok, so I know most people like Honig's but I haven't done much business with them. I know they have top quality pants, just from hearing people speaking highly of them [the pants]. However, January 4 or 5 (can't remember exactly, but I know for sure one of these 2 days) I ordered a pair of plate pants, and a pair of base pants from Honig's. The next day I get a call (mind you, this is a Monday or Tuesday) and they guy verifies my shipping and billing information, and tells me that he will get the pants in later that week, and will have them shipped out at the end of the week. So, I completely understand if something is out of stock (even though the website said nothing about being out of stock) and I do not mind waiting. However, I would like for you to at least tell me the truth. So, yesterday, January 14 I called Honig's to check on the status of my order and he told me that they are trying to get them shipped out. This is not what I was expecting to hear. I was expecting something like, "you should be getting them any time now" or something along that line. So last night, around 9:30-10:00 I receive an email from UPS saying that Honig's has sent over my information and I can track my order. Well, after much anticipation I look on UPS's website to track my order, thinking it should be here by Monday after taking so darn long in the first place. The expected delivery date is January 21! The pants are in Dallas, TX, which is only about 3 hours from where I live! The guy that called me previously was in Oregon. Why would the guy from Oregon call me about shipping pants from there, but the pants be in the Dallas office? I do not understand and do not plan to do anymore business with them than I have to. I am sure they are fine with that, too. But a 14-15 day turnaround on my order (when I chose priority mail [2-3 ground]) is just not acceptable in my book.

I work about 15 mins. from Honig's main office in Ann Arbor, MI. That's either a good thing or a bad thing. But I like the fact I can walk in and try stuff on before purchasing. That's one thing I don't like about internet shopping. I like to try stuff. Our assignor also steers us to Honig's. I like Honig's.

During part of my tenure as an umpire I lived in College Station, TX and I could just drive over to Honigs Southwest and try on a get whatever I needed. It was so nice to be able to touch and look at everything before I bought it. It also meant no shipping charges. Now, my old scheduler, Doug Williams is running that operation and doing a great job. Living in Texas again means that all of my orders...if shipped on the day that I place the order as is almost always the case...arrive at my office the next day. They have also done a great job on returns and getting stuff sent to me from their other warehouses if they are out of stock here in Texas. Anytime I have had any problem with an order they have fixed it to my satisfaction ASAP. I love the fact that they do not hit you for multiple shipping charges if they have to send you something from two different locations. (with their current closeout specials there is a chance that you will get hit with multiple shipping charges, but I have contacted their MI office and they have been able to get everything to me without having to charge me extra shipping).

Most of what they sell is their own brand. The quality is great. I used to use all of their plate gear, but I have just switched over to West Vest Gold chest and shins and a Wilson mask. I have never had any problem with my gear from them. Shirts and pants have also held up well. One thing that is disappointing, they no longer carry their old mask bag which was a great accessory. They have also started carrying a different Ditty bag that is not honigs banded as in the past. The new one has an outside zipper pocket, but I think I like the old one better. Their shoe bags which are great have also changed. They are now huge. I love how they come in pairs. It makes packing your gear a bit easier. The old size were snug on plate shoes, but worked. The new ones are big enough to hold a plate shoe worn by shaq. Not sure why the change, but they are still a great product.

Honigs is a first rate supplier. I have the K1 and single bar Mask. I also have a number of the shirts. The only thing rap I ever had about Honigs shirts was the collars....they tended to roll and pill....I understand that they are much improved....

Honigs is the supplier of choice for a few associations of mine......

You can not beat their customer service...and availability....they tend to be somewhat pricey.........but when in need they will come through for you.....

I've used Honig's a number of times and have been impressed on how quickly they ship items. Example- The beginning of last season I pull out my equipment bag to get ready for my first game of the season. I couldn't find any indicators. Kids love to play with those... I placed my order 2 days before my games and thought I would have to bum one off of my partner. I paid standard shipping and still had it the next day! I was amazed.

Honigs carries probably the largest selection for umpires including their own products. The prices are average. I haven't spoken to anybody there but I rated them high on service based on how quickly they get things out.
