Well, I'd hate to see the minors fizzle.    Despite growing up in big league cities (halfway between DC and BAL), I really become to love the minor league ball:   ticket prices are minimal, the beer is cheap, you sit close.     Now that I'm down in Carolina, it's all we have.    I've got four local minor league teams (Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Hickory, and Kannapolis).    All seem to have cemented long term relationships with the major league team they're affiliated with.  What will happen with the leagues, I do not know.

Of course, they could go the route of other sports and allow the taxpayer-funded colleges to finance their development teams.

    Also Greensboro and Durham.

    NFHS FED (High School) 8-4-1-i
Runner abandons effort to advance when he enters the dugout, or (with two outs) before all fielders leave the diamond.

Is it the majority opinion of high school officials that this rule should be modified more like OBR's, "leaving the dirt circle" instead of having to wait until he enters the dugout?

There is an easy fix. If you don't like FED rules don't work FED games. See how easy that was ?

Is this what you're ref too: Official Baseball Rules: Home (umpirebible.com)

Rule 5.09(a)(2) Comment: "Legally caught" means in the catcher's glove before the ball touches the ground. It is not legal if the ball lodges in his clothing or paraphernalia; or if it touches the umpire and is caught by the catcher on the rebound.

If a foul tip first strikes the catcher's glove and then goes on through and is caught by both hands against his body or protector, before the ball touches the ground, it is a strike, and if third strike, batter is out. If smothered against his body or protector, it is a catch provided the ball struck the catcher's glove or hand first.

If I'm not mistaken the definition of a Foul Tip was changed sometime before the season started. Now as long as it hits some part of the catcher, some part of the body or equipment, and is then secured in the hand, hands, or mitt it is a foul tip.

As for the OP. I dont believe anyone has mentioned a reason for PU NOT to cover 3b on this play.

That reason is because he does not have enough time to get there, get set, and maybe have to dash home on an overthrow.

"But BT, what about the whole 'I've got third if he tags' thing" you may ask.

Why that is different is because of the "tag" part of the question. That extra bit where R2 has to wait for first touch on the batted ball is what gives us the time to get up to 3rd.

You might want to rethink this.

    2014 NFHS Baseball Rules Interpretations

SITUATION 9: The home plate umpire, while positioned to make a call on a runner attempting to score, is hit by the ball in the mouth. His uniform shirt and pants become soaked with blood. RULING: The NFHS Sports Medicine Advisory Committee re-affirmed that if blood is on an umpire’s uniform, he will need to have it cleaned with the proper solution by a trainer, or change his uniform/gear. If he is unable to do so and he does not have spare clothing, and his partner does not have any gear or uniform pieces that will fit, it is permissible to wear what is needed to be able to finish the game. (3-1-6)

By the way, the rule cited in the OP is 2019 FED rule 3-1-6.

This is why you bring EVERYTHING to your games.

There is an add on TV, can't remember for what, but it shows a women umpire using the Raft.

She doesn't stand with her feet next to each other and bend/squat, she places one foot well behind the other and then bends down.

    It's called the scissors stance.

First, one of the reasons I started Umpire-Empire was to support umpires and I detest umpire/ official bashing. But my fanboy self was livid Friday night/Saturday morning. Normally, I espouse that umpires and sports officials never cost a team a game, but this has me rethinking the matter, and it happened not once but twice,  mere moments apart with the benefit of replay which was used on all of those calls.

:ranton: Scenario. ECU is leading 30 -27. The last few minutes of the game there were what I will objectively call several questionable calls. The two most disturbing calls were a reception (horrible pic below but the best I could find) which in real time looked like a catch and from one replay angle looked like a catch, but when viewed from the angle from behind the receiver it clearly showed the ball hit the ground before the receiver's arms. And you all know my opinions on sports announcers, but even they were in agreement it was not a catch for what it was worth. After review it was called a catch. That was a 4th down conversion which would have also essentially ended the game. Then as the story linked below, there was a fumble which was ruled a fumble on the field, which ECU recovered, but after review, was overturned to not a fumble.

The American Conference made a press release stating that there was an error. But what does that do??? Also what about the reception???  The fumble wasn't the only game altering incorrect call.

That was after midnight Eastern time and I couldn't sleep for a while..:rantoff:

I’ll start this off by saying I’m an Astros fan so I’m definitely biased, but do you really think you can make that call from behind the plate? He’d been going to Barrett all night.

By you saying this your comment, IMO, becomes null and void.
