  1. No, because it's never a foul ball, therefore it's exactly the same as a bobbled catch in fair territory
  2. What are the proper mechanics to call a batter out for being out of the box? I got one this week (in hindsight, I'm pretty sure I was right, but shouldn't have called it as I wasn't certain) and my mechanics were something along the lines of "Time! He's out" while pointing at the batter and making a fist. Then pointed to where he stepped and said "out of the box". Anything that should be done differently? Second question, is this PU's call to make, or should BU call it if he sees it, due to it being a hard call for PU?
  3. Not often I say this, but props to the announcers!
  4. That sounds like him expressing his desire to no longer participate. Run him right there.
  5. I'm really thinking about it this year... I'm just not sure that I can justify it as I'll be taking two years off of umpiring after next summer...
  6. *I don't know softball, but I'm assuming this is the same* Assuming the call was malicious contact, runner is out and ejected. MC supersedes obstruction.
  7. I can't see anyway that bringing the foot from (mostly) behind the rubber to in front could be legal. Maybe I'm missinterpreting OP?
  8. Im fairly certain this is illegal based on A) starting position (free foot behind the rubber) B) resetting the pivot foot Mostly commenting to follow the discussion though, because I feel this is one area where my rules knowledge may be a little shaky.
  9. I think you're probably right. However, I work a level of ball where the officiating is SUPER inconsistent. You get some good umpires (hopefully me included) that could address this kind of stuff, and you get some really, really, bad umpires who wouldn't, or worse, escalate the situation recklessly. I don't really use "today" all that much, but if I were too, it wouldn't be so much saying that I might be okay with it some other day, but more that, today, you're playing in a game where I'm in control, and it's not gonna happen. Not sure that's a ton better, but that's just my on how it can be used.
  10. My summer ball league (18u) is wood bats, and I already love it so much. The sound of a wood bat is just so much better than metal... Feels like real baseball!
  11. Which is why I'm fine with the EJ. The league probably told them, Anderson gets hit? Throw the pitcher.
  12. I've got no problem with the EJ based on the history, though I'm not convinced it was intentional. I also have no issue with Yost coming out and arguing it. disclaimer - this post may or may not be influenced by factors other than umpire considerations (thanks @scrounge )
  13. Is this true for all dead ball base awards? What about live ball base awards? Who decides whether the runner can complete the trip? I ask, because I had a kid get drilled in the neck (pitcher was throwing pretty hard for a 14's game), and go down. He got back up and walked towards the dugout to meet with his coaches, under his own power, but clearly in a lot of pain. They ended up pulling him before he went to first, and the defense appealed. I/my partner was/am not sure of the correct ruling, but my best guess was that it was legal as he was pulled for injury. DHC was a bit of a jerk about it, and was one run away from a spread (which he ended up getting), but didn't press too hard.
  14. That's an interesting point, but not one I'm bringing up on the field. I guess it's possible that the LEO is dressed in uniform to intimidate, but that's for sure a HTBT situation.
  15. If it was anyone other than a uniformed LEO volunteering their time, I'd say absolutely no way am I letting it on the field if I know about it (if it's CC and I don't know about it? I don't know, and I don't care). But it is a uniformed LEO volunteering their time to coach. Now, they may actually have a shorter leash due to the power dynamic optics, but I'm not telling them to lock it up unless I'm directly told to by a supervisor.
  16. But it has to be intentional, right? We know that a runner leading of third (assuming he's doing it right) hit by a batter ball is foul.
  17. Just to make sure I'm understanding you right, It's only because he said it very loudly that you'd eject, right? If he turned around and said "no way" quiet enough that no one but you and the catcher could hear it on his way to the dugout, that's, under most circumstances, not EJ worthy is it?
  18. Kinda similar to OP's story, I was doing a tourney (13's or 14's, don't remember which), and I had a really great catcher. Good skill, knew how to talk to an umpire, and was clearly having fun. Late in the game, I call a strike on the outside part of, and the fans of the other team started groaning. The catcher turns his shoulders towards the stands and groans right back at them. I just stood there trying not to laugh, pretty sure I shouldn't just let him do that, but not sure what would be appropriate. Had the same team again the next week, but unfortunately he wasn't catching.
  19. Would you classify it as a line drive? That's the only thing I can think of. Definitely not a dropped fly as Whit never touched the ball until after it bounced.
  20. Really? I've never run into that... Guess I just haven't done enough games to find all the whackos!
  21. R1 and R2. It's not true that no one did anything. They both advanced one base, but the batter never left the batters box.
  22. Had a game where I called a balk (I think it was not coming set? Don't remember) and the batter hit the pitch to right field. I'm pretty sure me and my partner were the only two people there who knew it was a live ball. After 15 seconds of nobody doing anything, partner called time and told the coach he had a choice (and then later when I tried to explain that coach doesn't get a choice on live ball balk he straight told me I was wrong ) to take the balk or play, which he took the ball for some reason (???). I was just waiting for the right fielder to run in, grab the ball, and throw to first. But he dient. Gotta love it when no one knows the rules!
  23. To clarify, the majestics are on sale right now usually they're slightly more expensive. Turns out there were no M Smitty's either, so it's a moot point
  24. Wait... Richvee and Rich Ives... Not the same name... Not the same account... Not the same person
  25. Around here, you give it to the home team, and then collect it after the game (make sure it's signed and all that). I don't mind collecting... Unless it's a contentious game. Then I do mind.
