  1. If you have so many players that you need a visual indicators for captains, you have too many players. Youth level captains are for leading warmups and talking down pitchers on the field. Although, the latter may be too difficult for them to fathom. Don't need to burn a visit to tell the pitcher to take a deep breath and slow down.
  2. We pounded that our guys need to know the count every time. Similar play, but ball bounced, B/R takes off, F2 fires the ball to F5 who tags out R2 trying to advance. Offensive coach, wanted a do over, didn't get it.
  3. Expect many new/young umpires to get this wrong.
  4. Teach the pitcher that with R2, there's no need to hold the runner at 1B. With R1 and R2, F3 should be playing defense. R1 isn't going anywhere. RHP, should be watching R2. I was the 1B coach in a game against a lesser-skilled friendly team. F3 was holding with 2 outs and R1 and R2, I suggested that F3 play defense and not worry about the runner, so he did, next hit was a hard ground ball just to his right. Had he been holding the runner, it would have been a base hit. Not holding, it was the third out.
  5. Not looking at the Green Book, but I was always taught, if he throws a warmup, he must face at least one batter. Now, if the pitcher was ineligible and throws a warmup pitch, we fix the problem and play on if it's caught before pitching to a batter.
  6. So, I've gotten burned by this a couple times this season. But when is the best time to appeal a Batting out of order. Game 1, wrong batter gets on base, next batter takes 2 pitches, now this one, I screwed up on, we appealed, which then just substituted the correct batter assuming the current count. Game 2, Batter who isn't in the lineup, makes 3rd out. Neither name or number are on the scrap of paper we were given. Next inning, batter steps into the box and we appeal. We are told that the batter is legal and that we should have appealed the last inning. Also, told that numbers don't matter, everything is based on last name, which of course we weren't given.
  7. I'm with this definition. To me, a perfect inning is 3 outs in less than 9 pitches. There was a recent game here in the Oregon State LL tourney and a pitcher threw 35 in 3 and a third. That's a damn good game.

    force out

    Yes, by stepping on the base first he removes the force. Since R2 never left the base, he is not out. Since only one out was scored the run scores. BTW, R1 refers to the runner on first base, R2 is the runner on second and R3 is the runner on third. If there were runners on 1st and 3rd, we'd have R1 and R3.
  9. This. We had a coach complain about it, with a new pitcher. PU allowed the glasses. During the first pitch, he called no pitch and had them removed. A brief flash was enough to make it distracting.
  10. Looks like the stiches broke, anyone with basic sewing skills should be able to put that back together.
  11. I've had a couple kids that go thru a 25 second ritual after they enter the box to hit. This is after taking 20-30 seconds to get the signs. Both teams get warned, then I start calling strikes.

    I just had a coach in Districts respond with a mumbled "uh-huh" I looked at him and and said, it's a yes or no question. If I don't hear, "yes" we don't play. As for bats, at the Juniors level, every player should have their own bat, it's not my decision as a coach to let somebody else use it. About half of my 13u team is swinging BBCOR. My son (13) just moved from a 32 drop 5 (USA) to a 31 inch BBCOR. But he's still hitting the ball 250-300 feet. And $300 is the midrange for anything heavier than a drop 10. I had one coach tell me that I was robbing him of distance by using a USA bat vs. a bpf 1.15, the next game he put one over the fence straight-a-way center. 330 feet. How much further does he need to hit it? Personally, I think the transition from USA to BBCOR is better.

  14. IIRC, every field had a different ground rule, so MLB made it universal to make it easier. Plus there are places where the yellow line is painted on the wall. Above the top of the yellow line, HR, below the top of the yellow line, play on. Similar rules as the foul poles.
  15. We got warned once for stealing signs, when a couple of our players told the batter to watch for the curveball, on a 2 strike count. (not a fan of that rule) I agree with making sure the other team doesn't disrupt the pitcher. I also don't like when teams yell, "Trouble!" on a fly ball.
  16. Are coaches considered part of the team? There's a reason they wear a uniform at FED and above. Many LL Majors players are probably smarter than you think. I was watching a game, R1 with 1 out, hard ground ball hit right to F3, he touches the base and throws to 2B, F6 steps on the base and runs in, flipping the ball to the mound, BU calls R1 out. R1 says he was never tagged. BU says he was out on the force. R1 says there was no force, runner was out at first. BU looks very confused. PU overturns and calls him safe. Most of the defensive players, stayed on the field, as they knew he was safe. Both F1 and F4 were yelling, "you gotta make the tag!" during the play. Both BU and F6 looked like they wanted to disappear. The best part was F5 explaining what happened to the defensive coach, who kept insisting there was a force. I had worked a majors game with R1 and R2 and no outs. Short fly to F3 in foul territory. Both runners go on the hit. F3 makes the catch, flips it to F1, standing on 1B, who fires it to F6 on 2B. Triple play. I didn't need a verbal explanation, their intent was crystal clear. The offensive coach did need an explanation, as he thought all foul balls were dead. The question in your scenario, was F5 confused because he was waiting for a call that didn't happen, or because he didn't know what he was doing?

    Because he was the last to complete an at bat and make an out. Because he wasn't out. Okay, I'll amend my initial answer. The last batter to complete an at bat and be called out or complete his at bat on or just prior to the third out. R1 and R2 with 2 outs, R2 gets picked off for the third out. R1 would be the last batted out.
  18. The fielder had his foot blocking the front half of the base. There was more than enough room to get back. One of the runners got back standing up. No fancy swim move needed.

    I would assume by the name, it was the last batter to complete an at bat and was called out. So, if there were no outs and R1, B/R rips a line drive to F3, who catches it, and then touches 1B for a double play on R1, who didn't make it back in time. So even though R1 was the last out, the B/R was the last batted out. R1 and R2, B5 is up, B4 was a K. B5 grounds into a FC at 3B. B4 is the last batted out. If there were no outs, R2 would be the last batted out.

  21. Had a couple this week that just have me scratching my head, it's like they read the rulebook, but then don't exactly know how to apply it. I'm U1, pick thrown from F1, runner dives back, safe. 1B Coach looks at me and says, "He's blocking the base, he's got to give him a clear path to get back!" "Coach, he was safe." Batter gets a hit and makes it to 1B. Back pick from F2, runner is back safe again. "He's blocking the base again! He can't do that!" "Coach, he was safe again." "Yeah, but he can't block the base." "Coach, I suggest arguing calls that aren't in your favor." I PU, R2 stealing third, runner slides way early and never makes it to the base, easily tagged out. Defensive HC asked for time and says, "That was Batter Interference!" It took me a minute to figure out what he was asking for. I look straight at him and said, "He was out." "Yeah, but it was batter interference." SMH.
  22. My fitbit versa has a countdown timer app. Not included, but I can set it to vibrate, so I know when the game ends without having to keep looking at it. That said, I try to keep the games moving. Had a LL asst. coach, complain that I wasn't giving their catcher enough time to get ready, so he, the coach, had to warm up the pitcher. I told him, he's got 4 other kids in the dugout that can do that. He told me, they didn't know how to catch. I said, Great, here's a chance for them to learn. I then let his manager know that although I won't be restricting that coach, I don't want to see him out of the dugout. We finished the game in 1:39. The asst. coach stayed in the dugout. I did coach a MS game, where the other team's pitchers were throwing picks on all our runners. We had one runner taking a 2 foot lead off 1B, and they tried picking him 12 times in one AB. This happened about 20 times in the game. I know it's not illegal, but talk about making a travesty of the game. Nearly a 4 hour game.
  23. Our DA (District Administrator) gets them. He's been around LL for a long time, so he knows who to call.
  24. I'm not calling a hinder because the fielder thought there might be a hinder. if R1 goes over or between the fielder and the ball, I'll call a hinder. If the runner stops and lets the ball go by, the fielder has to make the play.
  25. PU is at PoP, UIC is across from him, coaches and players are in batter's boxes. BUs are on the sides of the UIC. UIC will go over most of it. Coaches will forget most of it. If I'm PU, I start with the kids, play fair, hustle on and off the field, help your catcher get on the gear, warm up the pitcher, but most of all, Have fun! Then on to coaches, All players properly and legally equipped to LL standards? (I require a firm, "Yes" on this, no mumbling etc.) Ground rules, usually OOB lines, remind them if the ball gets stuck or goes under the fence, not to dig, throw up the hands and wait for an umpire. If there is a question about a judgement call, request time and when it's granted calmly talk to the umpire that made the call. If there's a question about the rules, request time and when it's granted, calmly approach the umpire that made the call and request the PU. During pre-game, ask the scorekeeper how they want changes. The UIC should have gone over this, but most coaches won't remember. We use, Player Number is coming in for Player Number at Position Number. For offensive, just get the Player Numbers, Player Number is batting for Player Number. As you increase in playing level, your tolerance for mistakes should go down. If an 8-10 coach comes out of the dugout, yelling "time" and walking to the mound, I'll grant time and head him off. I'll explain that he needs to request time first and when it's granted, he can leave the dugout and go out to the mound. If a LL baseball coach, pulls that same crap, he's going back to the dugout with a stern warning that he'll be restricted to the bench or gone, if he can't do it right. Make sure the UIC or yourself have time to do a proper equipment check. During the game, work on timing of calls, wait on catches. PU should have all catches and foul calls. During pre-game let the base umpires know to sell the call and not to call catches or fouls. Most important, keep the game moving. 8 warm ups for a new pitcher 5 for the same pitcher. I let the catcher know when he's got 2 left, then announce, "1 more" so the batter can be ready. Remind dugouts if the battery is not out and warming up, if the catcher was on base, get another kid with a mask and mitt out there. If a ball, goes out of play, let it go and hand the catcher a new ball. Remind the batter to keep one foot in the box. That's all I got for now.
